What is the cost of registering and keeping a car in you State

In Northern Virginia Things are getting out of hand. Roads are horrible, traffic terrible but costs keep on multiplying.

To register a new car
3.125% Tax ( Up from 3% last year)
1.25% first time registration fee( Up from $40.00 last year)
Plate renewal $51.00 per year( up from $41.00 last year
Inspection $26.00( Up from $16.00 last year)
Emissions( I believe $30.00)
Plus Personal propert tax each year.

Wow
I am hurting and can not afford to keep a spare car!!!

Maryland...just went through this:

Titling tax: 6% (up from 5%)
New Title Certificate: $50
Temporary registration: $20 (so I could get the car inspected)
Chesapeake Bay plates: $20 (worth it, IMHO)
MD State inspection: $60
2 Year Registration: $128

I think there might have been some other small fees, too. I don't have the receipts with me.

All the MB's are $28 a year. There is an inspection $5 - and that's a joke nobody ever even turned a headlight on. They just ask if everything works but they did fail me for window tint once - just once.

In PA

6% sales tax
$36 a year to register
$40 for safety/emission inspection

There are some other fees also depending on if you are transferring a plate or getting a new one.

Wow, you get it easy. The Maryland safety inspection is quite thorough. Mine took ~2 hours. They look at just about everything safety related. I even had to fix one of the tag lights (well, they look at every light, but I'm not sure of the importance of having both tag lights work )

6.25% Taxes
50 dollar registration
15 dollar inspection
On use cars you just had to pay taxes on what you paid for the car, but now you pay on the value of the car.

You can always just put Vintage plates on your 72. But it has gone up from $12 one time fee to $50 one time fee good for as many years you own the car. No inspection required also. They say you are only to use car for shows and only within 150 miles from home. I ran my 1980 chevy truck from January 2005 because of exhaust leak at manifold until the clutch went last month on Virginia vintage plates went everywhere Maryland, Wext virginia, Pennslivania, drove it to work every day never got hazzled about the plates. Even though I got pulled over for speeding 3 times (speedometer did not work either). I bought some for my $300 benz becasue the floorboard on rear passenger side is shot and in virginia they will not pass it if the floorboards have any holes. I now they failed my truck beacuse of a few small holes. I do plan on getting my 280CE register on regular plates but at least I will be able to drive it until I patch the floor and workout any kinks. They change the laws on vintage cars in June of last year requiring a notorized statement car is safe to operate there is a bill in house to remove the requirement for notarization. But yes it a pain on a regular car my 2005 I still have to pay over $200 property taxes, They also raised the sales tax on new cars to 5%. Lets not forget the $25 county/city window sticker.

8.25% sales tax upon initial purchase
Approx. $40. per year for reg. (depends on weight)
$35 per year for inspection on gassers........$10. per year on diesels (no emissions).

Insurance costs of $800/year/vehicle without any collision.

On my 03 Dodge truck the plates cost $165.

ON my old benzos they cost about $75.

Ouch! For many years the old ones cost $25.

Antique plates are the same price as regular plates but you have to have the car inspected by a policeman and declared safe before you can get them. I passed. I don't need anymore things to run and do.

When I was in Texas many years ago you paid fees for plates depending on weight of car is that still the case or is it just 50 for every car now?

Being a lifelong PA resident - and also quite naive - I was unaware of the differences in each state (paying registration based upon the value of the car).....until good ol' Turbo Tax asked me last night about deducting my car registration fees (I cannot).

But yeah - my answer is the same as VW.

I do have Vintage plates on my 72 and thats the way to go for a car 25 years or older. I wanted to buy another diesel(sold both of mine) dumb move and thinking about it its just too much money if it really does not get any use!!

I'm not sure. My van and my Mercedes and my crown vic all cost the same, but they do list the weights on the paper. Maybe its because I have always had heavy cars. My van was listed as a motorhome though.

to elaborate a bit on "the don's" statement, Florida's tag fees are based upon vehicle weight. The W116 300SD is something like $45 but the VW is something like $25. When cars reach about 30 years old the fee goes down to I think $20. No vehicle inspection in most of the state but I think they smog in Dade (Miami) and Hillsborough (Tampa).
