The smell of sexcess

Females love the sweet smell of sexual success

* Bennett Galef, McMaster University

It might be the sweet smell of success or the bitter whiff of despair, but there's something in the odour of a male rat that tells a female whether he's been copulating like crazy or starved of sex for days. And to make matters worse for frustrated males, the females much prefer the smell of road-tested studs.

Bennett Galef's team at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, placed two male rats behind mesh screens at either end of a tank, one of which had recently copulated with a female. A number of different female rats were then placed, separately, in the middle of the tank. Galef's team found that these females typically moved over and lingered longer near the stud. When trials were repeated using female rats with no sense of smell, they showed no preference for either male (Animal Behaviour, DOI: 10.1016/j.anbehav.2007.08.026).

The study seems to illustrate the maxim "success breeds success". It's highly likely that the female rats are attracted by the smell of the sexually active male, rather than repelled by the stench of desperation from the sex-starved one, says Galef.

"It's unlikely that males would evolve a signal that makes them unattractive to females," he notes.

That's sort of like "It takes money to make money," isn't it?

I thought you took a whiff of that couch before you bought it.

I think there's a marketable product there.

That would explain why some people I know can't walk past a hot girl without doing her, and others can't...

I swear one of my drinking buddies can spend 10 minutes in a club and be ramming a hot one. The last one was 35, smoking, and in the back of her husbands Lexus.
