1989 jeep wagoneer limited

i have a 1989 jeep wagoneer limited. it is a cherokee body style with the 4.0 staight 6 fuel injected. a few weeks back i drove it to walmart and when i got back it wouldn't start. So i had to tow it home. i had the fuel pump replaced a few months back. i had the ignition coil check and it failed also the ignition module failed so i replaced them. I pulled the distributer out and had it tested. The barring where going out so i replaced it as well. Also the crack shaft position sensor was burned and i think shorted out when it rubbed the manifold so i replaced it too. i have it in time and it starts up and runs but when you give it gas it starts to jerk the car but when you let off it idles smooth again. i had the fuel pressure checked and it passed. i had replaced the throttle position sensor and fuel pressure sensor to be sure and it still does the same. i had found that the cruise control computer(yellow AMC box under the steering wheel) had a burned resister(may that cause this, does the cruise control effect how the car runs?) if anyone could help me with this i would greatly appreciate it.

P.s. also it has a new rebuilt trans it it. it doesn't have a blown head gasket. also the timing chain isn't broken or warn out(had tested it). i was wondering if anyone knew what happens if the idle position sensor goes out?( i was told that the opposite problem my jeep has would happen. it would not idle well but it would accelerate fine. also how do you run a code tester on this wagoneer? it doesn't have a plug in under the dash. where could i get the codes if i could. all the books i have skip 1987-1990 jeeps. on codes.

I'm sorry Eddie...but I'm very, very confused on many, many levels.

EDIT: You know, I take that back, I've been entirely too sarcastic lately.

But a friendly word of caution - this is a mercedes forum and although our members are extremely patient. helpful and knowledable.....I'm sure you'd get a better response on a jeep forum? And please understand...people ask all kinds of things on here (including myself)....but not usually with their very first post. So there, end of rant. Good luck in finding your solution.

Curious, why here?

You have a Renix (Renault/Bendix) ignition system (sworn by and at) often discussed here:

http://www.naxja.org/forum/

You'll get more info over there. Some codes can be read only while running and only with a specific adapter - you'll get just as far with an ohm meter.

Check the forum - send me a pm if you need specific info - I have factory manuals for an 89!

WTF?

My guess is the fake wood panels are to blame.

or dropping a 617 in would solve your problem.

Hahaha...good one, I didn't think of the wood panels. Orginally, I was going to ask him if he was running WVO through it. But I didn't. So now I did.

And I'm not banging on Jeeps - I grew up driving them, I just have nothing to offer on the wagoneer. I drove an 85 CJ in high school -spent a ridiculous amount of time on it, only to have it rear-ended in making a left hand turn and rolled it/totaled it. Bought an 88 wrangler after that - hated it. The new XJ's don't look too bad - but I'm not big on the TJ's and YJ's.

There is a '78 CJ7 sitting in my mother-in-laws garage with 50k original miles on it......just waiting for me to restore it. Ahhh, if only I had the time...

I had a 90 with the I6. Never had any trouble with it. At 250k is was having a tough time passing smog in Houston due to stricter regs, so I donated it to charity. I don't think that vintage has a computer you can read. Mine was fuel injected, not sure when they quit putting carbs on them.

I have had six or so Cherokees over the years and haven't replaced that much stuff on all of them put together. I think you need better guidance and more patience.

That Wagoneer is an XJ, different in trim and other incidentals only from the Cherokee- but still built on the XJ platform. Check out www.jeepforum.com for loads of info- there is an XJ-specific forum there which should have your answer. I just picked up a 98 XJ and have found the forum very informative (not the 'shop, but, well... what is?)

My bad....I was getting my alphabet soup jumbled...I meant to say the new JK's don't look bad, not the XJ's....

Thanks for the linky though - I'll keep that in mind when I find the time to tinker.

I wonder if my initial sarcasm scared the OP away? Come back Eddie, come back, I'm welcoming you with open arms now.....but please explain yourself

I wonder if this is the same Eddie Jones that plays in the NBA? Could explain why he made a slipshod first post and hasn't returned - probably took some time off for the All-Star break and all.

This is also why I retracted my harsh sentiments earlier, Eddie......because I know you played alongside my man, Aaron McKie at Temple University - whom would later become a part of my beloved 2001 Sixers that made a run at the title.

What's it like having groupies? And shouldn't you be driving a Bentley instead of a Jeep?
