Bassett Selling Chinese-made Furniture
We were shopping around for furniture and decided on a pair of Bassett Hudson recliners. They looked nice and felt comfortable, and with John Elway's name attached to their advertising, I figured, How American is that?
Anyway after a few months wait, the special order arrived yesterday. As I was removing the various tags, there was one that said in bold print: Made in China. I was at once stunned and then just as quickly felt a sense of resignation. I made the mistaken presumption that "U.S." furniture was still made in factories in America. I've been able to justify buying Chinese hand towels and kitchen gadgets, but this is a whole new category. I have never spent this much money on a Chinese product, and I really thought I was supporting American workers with this purchase. I can't return them based on this, but I really feel like I should. OK, rant over.

Most of the world's container ship fleet must be somewhere in transit between China and the US.
I wonder if they go back empty to China or if there's something in there? Dollar bills? Ken300D

I think it used to be waste paper. But since we don't read newspapers as much anymore, due to our online addiction, that market is shrinking.

We are buying a few more things, and I will be sure to ask specifically where the goods are made for now on.

Ashley Furniture is made in Arcadia, WI., between La Crosse and Eau Claire, and just SE of Mpls/St. Paul...plus, I'm sure that they have quite a few other factories around the US...and Ashley also has a fairly good-sized Mexican work-force in Arcadia too...
Now, the point that I'd quit buying furniture altogether is when the "Made In China" lable starts showing up on the Amish-built stuff...then I'll know it's all for show... ![]() ![]()
