Well, I feel old now...
My girlfriend and I went out to dinner tonight. More to the point, we took her mother out to dinner. Her mother's birthday was Friday and she had a gift certificate to a local restaurant. It's an interesting place, BBQ with a bar and a mechanical bull for those so inclined ( http://www.bigbubbasbadbbq.com/index.php ). They also have dancers that come to your table and dance for you if it's your birthday or some other such event, female for male guests, male dancers for female guests. Food is so-so, music is loud, drinks are flowing, and the crowd is always interesting...
But that's all beside the point. We pulled our server aside to tell him that it was her mom's birthday, so he could arrange for the dancers and all. He said ok, and asked for her name. As I mentioned, the music is loud, so communication is sometimes difficult, we told him it was "Jenny, you know, like the song, 867-5309". He looked at us blankly. You know, Tommy Tutone? 80's song? Blank stare. "Jenny I got your number, I need to make you..." "It was on Family Guy" "I know Family Guy" "Stewie tries to call home but the only number he can remember is 867-5309? He says "Damn you Tommy Tutone!" "Oh yeah, I've seen that, but I never knew what it meant..." He writes it all down, says he'll go home and Google it. We shake our heads, then hang them. Tell mom that it's her birthday, she's supposed to feel old, not us... ah... Well. Youth was good. I enjoyed it. Kinda a shame that it's gone now. Stolen by a 20 year old waiter. Dang. MV |

I hear you talking.
Did you hear the Korn cover song "word up"? Talk about a rush of memories thinking of the first one by Cameo. Pure 80's at its best. Korn's version is stellar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5aznvvBSLI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u_7Kp_TapA4

I was in line waiting to checkout and the cashier asks this guy his phone number. He says... 867-5309. We both crack up, the cashier has a blank look on her face.

I thought it was pretty cool when my son told me that he really liked "this guitar player he had just started listening to, Jimi Hendrix." I told him that Jimi died in the sixties. At the time we were in the mid-nineties.
I never liked the stuff my old man listened to. I think our generation (baby boomers) is a lot cooler than many others were.

Many years ago I heard a comedian say "you know your old when you hear a "Police" song on an Oldies station. They were just becoming popular at the time and I recall many "classic rockers" didn't accept them as rock but sort of a new age punk type thing. Years later you can guess the rest.

I now own CD's such as Red Sovine, Hank Sr., Faron Young, Marty Robbins. Funny though, I am like him and don't really like any "new country"

Went to the movie theatre Friday night, packed with little teenie boppers all dressed up. They were buying tickets to Hanna Montana 3d. While I was thinking, who the F*%# is Hanna Montana, I got a shocking comment from one of the snots. "Hey, let's (like) ask this old guy if he can (like) break a 20." referring to me.
I'm 21!!!

interesting timing
Last year I chaperoned a youth group ski trip, and got to drive one of the 12 passenger vans full of kids. They wanted to take over the CD player... so I agreed on the condition that I have first right to reject songs ( being a church outing). Turns out they choose all 60's through 80's oldies. Best of Queen, Emerson Lake & Palmer, Eagles, Stones.... Not too bad at all. This year's ski trip is next weekend, I wonder what the tunes will be this time.
