Hello

New to the board, did'nt see a lounge so I thought I'd say hello a a/all here.

My newest adoption is a 1980 240D, pretty good shape, vacuum leaks, vac pump not working, one or more plugs not glowing, nothing major that I can see, wanting to try the wvo conversion.

Not new to diesels but am new to the Benz's, I'll try and keep the dumb questions to a minimum. Don

Can the 240D go up hill in the Ozarks or is it a downhill vehicle, only?

Thanks for the welcome, well I don't think it will get many speeding tickets, I guess I should add it's a auto, you can stop laughing now, I got her to try the veggie thing, if it works well I'll probley sell and upgrade to a 300 turbo.

that's why i'd get a 240D, to experiment. My mechanic has one that he still drives with almost a million and a quarter miles! He's replaced much of the interior, suspension, and various engine components like piston sleeves, etc, but the car simply will not die. I can't get him interested in biodiesel, though. Living in the grease pit of Louisiana, Mississippi, ETEX and Arkansas I'd sure consider it.

Bot - that reminds me of my first Benz, the 250. It was a gasser, but last I knew, it was still being driven. It had been repainted, new floor fitted, engine overhaul (uppers only), etc. but it would not die. I even got hit by a 5-ton Hydro truck during an ice storm, the impact knocked me right through an intersection, yet it only generated a dent and popped the trunk. :D

Those 'early' models were true tanks.

Thanks for the welcome, yeah seems to be lots of threads here, sleeved engine huh, can they be replaced in car ? that would make for a easier rebuild.

Welcome from STL...have fun and learn a lot! This forum has the best tech information of any brand-specific forum I've ever seen, and polite discussions, for the most part, in OD.

There is one brave soul here who believes he can replace a sleeve with the engine in the car. For most of the rest of us it requires removal of the engine.

Welcome. The 240d is one of the best built cars ever. I like them so much I have had about 12 of them.
