Question OK Coffee Afficianado's-Paper, Plastic or Gold

Filters that is.

What's the best bet for the best tasting coffee? I've about run through my paper filter supply and need to get something in the near future.

It would be nice not to have to buy paper filters but are the plastic screen or gold screen washable filters suitable replacements or do they affect the taste? Is one better than the other? Or am I better off sticking with the paper?

As you can imagine this is of the utmost importance!

I don't know, Swamp. I drink coffee from my French er FREEDOM coffee press. I used to use paper filters in my Melitta when I still had that.

Absolutely no difference that I can tell from filter type to filter type.

A French press is the way to go for the best tasting coffee, IMO.

yep

X3 - back when I first joined the site, I discussed this ad nausem in some coffee thread cuz cuz it was the only thing I felt comfortable chiming in on at first.

Go to Target and pick up the Bodum Brazil french press for $20 and you'll never go back....no need for filters anymore.

The only downside that I can see....is that you really are limited to making 16 or so ounces at a time - kinda inconvenient if you are hosting large numbers (as in, your legendary tailgating extravaganzas).

I had a french press, and it did make the coffee taste better. My only problem was it was always too strong for me. So I had to stop using it, and I gave it to my brother, who like very strong coffee. I would also have to agree on the quantity limitations on the French Press, it's not the best thing for people who drink lots of coffee...

I now have a small 4 cup maker, and have ran into the same problem, which filter to buy. I think I am going to buy a BUNN 10 cup maker sometime in the future, since my little 4 cup maker can't make my coffee hot enough, so that would rule out buying a fancy filter at this time for me.

Gold is good, IMO. I don't notice any difference in taste- if anything, it improves it.

My grandfather gave me an insulated-french press this past christmas because I was tired of dealing with the coffee filters.

I also bought my girlfriend a hot tea /water dispensor so making pressed coffee is a snap.

In the Melitta maker, I use Melitta unbleached paper cone filters. I was using a fine mesh filter of unknown make (it came from Germany, that's all I know), and it worked well, never clogged, lasted at least a year, and most likely paid for itself.

My mother uses a gold filter with a Cuisinart (I think), but it sometimes overflows.

So far, the pressed coffee, comes out a bit weak for me. Maybe I need to use a finer grind than the coarse that was recommended?

If and when I get actual beans, I use an old hand powered grinder.

Coffee? Waste of time. It really doesn't do anything beneficial.
