HI ALL,

I have weak/non-existant vacuum to operate my door locks/engine shut-off. I have had this car for nearly ten years and have done a lot of repair/maitenance myself but alwyas had the vacuum problems fixed by mechanic. Now I want to learn myself. This issue is re-curring in my car-dooor locks/engine shut-off so it must be a specific valve/tank that periodically leaks...does anyone know where to look first for the solution to this recurring problem. I have quick access to used parts and am pretty comfortable working on this car. Thanks in advance, Betty Blue

p.s. the aforementioned car is for sale in northern california, great runner.

Post this on the "tech side' you'll get a faster response.

Could be one of three checkvalves on the vacuum pump....could be the vacuum pump itself. I'm sure you've checked for leaking lines, yes?
As Mistress posted....a post in the diesel discussion, will get you lots of response - one of which will be to use the search function, and browse the archives. (just so you know what to expect)

Posting on the diesel discussion will get you more help. There are vacuum diagrams posted as stickys on the diesel discussion. All the vacuum systems are interconnected on your car. A leak in any system will cause shut off problems typically.]
Using the vacuum diagrams and a Mity Vac you should be able to track down the leak. Typically the vacuum pods in either the climate control system or door locks develop leaks. The shut off valve can also tear its diaphragm.

In my E320 (I weep silent tears of loss), I accidentally broke a connector that was on the driver's side near the firewall. It wasn't completely severed but leaked so badly that it couldn't move the climate controls. I went over the whole engine compartment knowing I must have done it but couldn't find the dang leak. My kid came out and heard the very feint hissing (I never did) and pointed right to it.

I throw that in and add my vote with the other folks' above -- post it in diesel. Those guys have seen it all.

Betty Blue's Vacuum Leak

HI ALL,

Thanks for your support. I went to pick & pull and found a whole bunch of parts for vac. system. Then dove-in. I changed all easily replaceable rubber connectors etc...in engine compartment. No luck. Then went to cabin...everything looked good...no change. Next went behind instrument panel. Discovered my oil pressure gauge connection was leaking-onto rubber connectors for vacuum engine shut-off line(no more vacuum). Replaced those connectors. Results= shut-off is fine now. Door locks on front doors work. Rear door locks do not work. That was enough for one day. I think my actuators on rear doors must be shot if everything else works?

Vacuum leak up-date...

Driver side passenger door actuator is the culprit...rubber cracked on diaphragm(did i spell that right?) on top of actuator...3 of 4 doors working now...back to pick & pull for an actuator-that should do it. I'm glad i went at it myself this time-cleared the vacuum system hurdle-@ least one of them. Well done Imbroke, retired @ 42.

Congrats on getting that one. There are people that sell the rubber parts, but I don't know off the top of my head who. Keep going, you'll get it.
