Jeep with MB diesel
Anybody familiar with the Grand Cherokee that had the MB diesel option? It is the 6 cylinder, not the 4 cylinder that the Liberty had.
Any comments/experience with it? I am looking for a good tow vehicle but I don't want to give up the 20MPG on my current ride. thanks Fred

2007 was the first model year. A lot of web sites like Edmunds and Kelly have the diesel option kind of hidden, so when I was doing research on prices it was hard to track down numbers.
Based on local dealer prices, these are not hot movers, probably due to the price of diesel. If your diesel gets 4-5 more MPG than a gas car, you break even on fuel cost. Doing a comparison to my current SUV, the diesel came out ahead across the board, however, it takes 50,000 miles to rack up fuel saving of $2000. To put it in perspective, it takes a long time to justify the premium you pay for the engine option, HOWEVER, if they discount these vehicles due to slow sales, it may be a good deal. Plus obviously, some people just like diesels. I like the concept of a diesel in a Jeep, but I can save about $10k on purchase price if I go with a gas Jeep (V8) from 2005, and even have it decked out. All the Jeep diesels I have seen advertised are new (am looking locally). I would like to test drive one though.

I think in Europe you could even get the old-style Cherokee with a diesel (before the Daimler Chrysler merger) but I don't know who made that motor.

You could get an XJ (Cherokee) here in the U.S. with a Renault diesel in the early 80s. I saw one once- the guy who owned it literally flew to France a couple times/year to get replacement parts. Not exactly cost effective...

I wondered if this truck would make it to market. This is the first confirmation I have seen. I suspect that this will be a rare bird.

Not sure about the future of this vehicle, though, considering the split of Damiler and Chrysler.

It's a $1,655 option. From the Jeep website..
The 3.0-liter V6 CRD engine produces 215 horsepower at 3,800 rpm and 376 pounds-feet of torque at 1,600 - 2,800 rpm and gets an estimated fuel economy of 18 miles city and 23 miles highway for 4x2 models and 17 miles city and 22 miles highway for 4x4 models. The CRD offers outstanding towing capacity, 7,400 pounds when properly equipped and a driving range of approximately 450 miles. 42 State only (CA,CT,MA,ME,NY,PA,RI, & VT excluded)

300 Crd
Chrysler also sells their 300 sedan with the same MB V6 diesel in it ... in the UK and Australia. It
can get mid 30's mileage and costs a lot less than the E series. Do you think it would be worth it for MB to keep supplying engines for other manufacturers? That may become a whole separate business. |

I meant the old XJ Jeep Cherokee from 1984 onward.

They built the Peugot diesel cherokee back around 1986 or so. It was the original Cherokee XJ. They also built the XJ with a different diesel for export only and I think they built them up to the end, not sure. They were still building a variant of the XJ in China last time I looked into it.
