Leave it to beaver

Last weekend I cut some holes in a beaver dam that is flooding my in-laws' forest. I did it to drain the pond and hopefully, give the trees a chance to recover some roots. I'm no trapper nor do I see myself going back every week or so and cutting more holes in the damned dams. No, I am not going to blow the dams. (I'm picturing myself going to the coop and asking for 50# of ammonium nitrate. BATF would be on me faster than you can say David Koresh). I know that one method of control is to hide near the hole in the dam and wait for the beavers to come repair it. That's got to be good for 1 or 2 shots at most -- no threat to the population.

Any other ideas?

Since the beav is most active in the early evening and before sunrise I'm thinking that a laser sight on a .22 might be effective (this one is cheap and should work on a .22 http://www.nextag.com/Yukon-Night-Vision-Monocular-573417248/prices-html). What about noise and flash suppression? Is there a legal doo-dad or is this another BATF no-no?

B

Noise and flash, .22LR Sniper, if you want to make it even quieter put a baby nipple over the end of the barrel.

SV-99? Nice looking rifle but for $800 I'd rather hang-out with Elliot Spitzer's chauffeur. At night it's close-in work and my 10/22 should be okay. I also have an old Remington single-shot bolt action.

At $400 or so for the scope, either rifle could easily take the scope I mentioned above. I'd be shooting at a max of 50 yds from up a ladder. I'm thinking light them up and pop them as they come in to repair the dams. I've never used an IR scope, but at 50 yds, so what?

Bottle nipple? Cool. What does it do, drop muzzle velocity?

Bad link , the round is called .22 sniper or subsonic. The bottle nipple contains the flash and suppresses the noise surprisingly well, it makes that .22LR a quiet lethal sum *****. There are better ways but thats a quick home grown legal method that will work, although I'm sure someone will say that the nipple is illegal.

The baby nipple will yield similar results but they shred after a few shots.

I'm trying to help you justify the purchase of a cool toy! Keep logic out of this!

Subsonic ammo looks like a good bet. The soda bottle thing -- a website says it doesn't work and the youtube thing sure sounded like it worked. Worth a trip to the range.

And what's with chicks in bikinis firing automatic weapons? Is this a fetish I missed out on having? I noticed that the camera(man) kept the focus on the dancing boobies rather than where the bullets were going (downrange, presumably).

The websites don't test with Sub-Sonic, the Youtube link is a proper sealed rig....it works.

You may end up wanting more than one or two.

I suspect a 22 unless the sniper has a lot of punch might be a little light for a beaver.

Agreed ... in highschool I had a semi auto .22 sniper rifle (it could be disassembled and the stock became the case). It took a whole clip to down a full grown ground hog in our field.
