gout....ouch

I am just in the last bit of an episode of gout. Not a pleasant condition to have. Too much beer and bratwurst everyday in the Bahamas brought it on and it took many visits to the doctor to nail it down as it was my first happening. The bad news is that the medication to stop the gout screwed up my blood thinness needed for my heart valve. The cherry juice my wife gives me gives me the sh^&s. Getting old is great fun. Sobering to say the least.

I had a boss who got gout from time to time. Sounds like you already know about the dietary aspects of it. I read about a study that concluded frequent sexual activity, with or without a partner, helps reduce the incidence of gout.

Jeez i had none of that in the bahamas. So more of that and less bratwurst? Is Guinness beer for the sake of gout arguments? If I keep this up will I end up like Carleton?

A fellow that I worked with for several months (in his mid thirties) has gout. He doesn't get affected all the time - just when he drinks too much alcohol, and not enough water.
Things that can bring on a gout attack (so he tells me) Alcohol, gravies, not enough water, and rapid weight loss.
Not being able to have a lot of gravy, has got to stink.
I hope you can get it under control without medication soon!

My younger brother suffers from gout and he is a voracious meat eater which makes it worse.

My father (76) got gout a couple of TG's ago from too much red zin and snacking turkey skin when he took the leftovers down to the barn fridge each evening until it was gone. We wondered why it took him so long to come back every evening. He didn't like it much, but it did go away and hasn't re-occured.

My lil brother got a mitral valve "repair" at age 43. Doesnt require thinners like a pig valve does. Was also done through a 3" cracked chest rather than stem to stern. Four years and so far, so good.

My options are limited due to coumadin,so it's Percoset,vicodin,Fentanyl,inter-alia.

I have Porphyria,as well as rheumatiod arthritis, atrial fibrillation,Mitral valve prolapse and seizure disorder, looks like there was some "relative"intimacy in the wayback

Is colchicine still prescribed for gout?

That's one weird chemical. It can be used to stop cell division by preventing microtubule formation. Plant breeders may use it to double the chromosomes in a cell, resulting in tetraploidy.

I have heard{all disclaimers apply}that it can cause leukemia and severe gastro-intestinal contretemps in SOME cases.

We use that for FMF (Familial Mediterranean Fever) which is related to FSF (Familial Shar-Pei Fever) in Chinese Shar-Peis also. However, IIRC, Indomethacin is the preferred treatment for gout. Please be sure you EAT FOOD BEFORE TAKING it or you could fawk up your stomach.

Yes it is.....that is what I have taken for years to control my gout. Actually I take a conbination of Colchine and Probenicid twice daily and I pretty much eat and drink what I want. The best way to minimize flair ups is large quantities of water, it keeps the system flushed out.

IIRC, they identified it by confirming that nothing was broken there and doing some uric test.

What did they give you?

That's interesting my now deceased neighbor who was in good health went to NOLA for 6 months working for OSHA, he returned with severe gout and he attributed it to a poor diet while in NOLA...a few months later other symptoms arose and he was diagnosed with Leukemia....months later he died.

Hmmmmm, Carletion, Aklim, Howie independently have 3 gout & leukemia stories. That cries out for an epidemiology study. I feel the force will be strong with whomever Googles this.

I did and Indomethacin is the preferred drug. Also it is what my wife prescribes for cases like mine.
