Potential Darwin Award Candidate

Frank Patti, 26, of West Islip ... was riding west on the unregistered 2006 Kawasaki bike when he saw the two officers parked at a service station, according to a police report. "Patti looked at the officers, raised his middle finger in their direction, brought the motorcycle up onto the back wheel, a maneuver often referred to as a 'wheelie,' and took off southbound at a high rate of speed," the report said. "He dangerously weaved in and out of traffic, changing lanes erratically. At Great Neck Road and Oak Street, he executed another wheelie and continued southbound."

Gee, when I'm driving my unregistered vehicles, I try to be a little more inconspicuous....

blkntancj 05-08-2008 12:34 PM

That is very common, it is commonly known that 1) it is difficult for a police car to catch a motorcycle and 2) most agencies have restrictive pursuit policies. It has become a game for people like that to intentionally attract law enforcement attention and then run from the officers. I have seen it personally a number of times.

TWeatherford 05-08-2008 12:41 PM

Yeah, the bikes can almost always outrun the cops. A lot of police offices that can chase cars can't chase motorcycles, its simply no use. So the cops have to catch them when they're off the bike and nail em quick. I think they should be allowed to just drop them with buckshot if they run, them and all runners. It would put a stop to it pretty quickly I imagine.

elau 05-08-2008 04:05 PM

If the cops are allowed to do that, then you have people crying "excessive force" all over the country. They can't win.

I usually take a little of that action in my own hands when I am in the mood. When I see one of those bikers come flying up behind me, I like to surprise them by a sudden lane change. A few times I swear the riders soiled their pants.

My defense if I ever cause one to flip: they came up with excessive speed and I never saw them. Bet you the law will be on my side.

I drive an umarked Impala and I do something very similar. When I see them coming up behind me I wait until they are close and then casually turn on my rear deck lights. The flashing red and blue causes a rapid decceleration.:D

Whenever I ride my bike in traffic I do not speed and give everybody a wide berth. Just being on a motorcycle gives some people an attitude.

catmandoo62 05-08-2008 06:51 PM

this is kindof off topic but i was watching cops about a week ago and i believe they were in vegas.the cop they were riding with had had his leg amputated when him and a highschool buddy went out shooting one day and buddy shot him by mistake.so now he has an artificial leg.anyway they pulled over this black guy riding his bicycle after dark without a headlight.while talking to him the black guy took off running.turns out white guys can't jump but black guys can't out run a one legged cop.damn that was funny, and he let that guy know he got his ass kicked by a one legged cop.

Yeah well, some people are just jackasses like elau over there.

Hatterasguy 05-08-2008 11:45 PM

I hate them, I see them buzzing around everywhere and there is always a story in the paper of someone dieing.

Just the other day I was stopped in traffic on I95 and some moron was riding one on the white line between lanes. If I saw him sooner I would have moved over, the 18 wheeler in front of me actualy tried to hit him but sadly missed.:D It would be the bikes fault anyway he wasn't in a lane, just say you didn't see him.

when my uncle lived in Cali he had a Ninja. He would ride between traffic when the highways were stopped, which was a majority of the time. One day he and his buddy were going like 25 mph on the line and his friend passed a pickup and then the jerk opened the door on my uncle. He hit the door and wound up on the ground. The a hole laughs in his face. My uncle procedded to get up and beat the living crap out of the guy.

My friend(two houses over) rides a honda crotch rocket. Sometimes in traffic people like to harass bike riders so he wears chain on his boots. Last time he had an issue some jerk in an H2 tried to squish him between a bus.. so my friend fought back and kicked the guys truck, dented the fender and ripped the mirror off...

If someone tried to hurt me like that you bet I am going to cause them some harm... might be a scratched fender or a broken window... but no one screws with my life.

Hatterasguy 05-08-2008 11:56 PM

Well they shouldn't be riding where they are not supposed to be, break the law and don't cry when it bites you. If you value your life ride in a lane like every other vehical on the road. They are not in a lane so if you hit them, they would be at fault.

As for the fighting I have no desire.

TheDon 05-08-2008 11:58 PM

I like breaking things :)

Ara T. 05-08-2008 11:59 PM

Lane splitting is actually legal here..

lietuviai 05-09-2008 12:04 AM

I got a mirror broken on my pick-up once from a lane splitter when I used to be stuck in LA traffic. I was minding my business so it was like the a-hole got too close to me. I have no sympathy for arrogant lane splitters.

About 2-3 years ago, I was coming up the off ramp from Eastbound I-90, up to a set of lights. I stop and wait...

The lights changed green for me (It's about 0330), but for some unknown reason, I stayed stopped...then I saw it...

Out of the corner of my eye, about 3 blocks to my left, I noticed a "glint" of light and then "NEEEEYOUNNNnnnnnn" - A crotch-rocket rips past me - probably doing WELL OVER 100 m.p.h....

I wait a few seconds...

Then, here it comes...a WI. State Trooper Crown Vic, doing a "power-slide" from the exit ramp from Westbound I-90, then "red-lining" his tach, past me...

Two things: If I had pulled out when the light had changed, that damn bike would have gone right through my vehicle, with me, having his front tire tatoo'd on my left side...he had NO LIGHTS ON at all and even less brains...however, he did have a helmet on, for what little good that would have done him IF I had pulled out...

Second thing: I don't know if they have them now, but that trooper should have had a photo-gun or video camera when numbnutz went blazing by. I'm going to check with a retired Trooper friend of mine this weekend to see if they finally got that straigtened out...

BTW, they never caught that excuse for DNA...

But another one wasn't so lucky...

Last fall, I just turned onto a frontage road about 8 miles from where the above had taken place...sure enough...double-yellow line and a little Ninja-tweet comes tearing up my back bumper, then swings out into on-coming traffic, causing me to hit the binders and head for the stones on the right...no one gets hurts, but NOW I'M PASSED THE POINT OF BEING PISSED...

I gun it and start after NumbNutzNinja...I don't have to go too far...as I clear the rise in the road, I see him turning into a BP/Quiznos and he ducks behind the store (this place is on the right, go to the left and it's an entrance ramp for the East-bound traffic on I-90, go straight, it takes you to the rest of this story.)...I pull into and behind the store...there's Mr. NumbNutz...sitting on his bike, just as he's removing his helmet, he sees me...I'm already getting his plate number - he then reaches down (TOO LATE!) and bends his plate inward and upward so that it can't be read.

I'm on the cellphone w/the 9-1-1 dispatcher...they are going nutz!!!

"WHERE ARE YOU? YOU HAVE HIM IN SIGHT? WHAT'S THE PLATE NUMBER?"

Yep, smartass was running from three different agencies...and they lost him about 8 miles before he passed me...

As I'm giving the description of everything I'm seeing (bike, plate, his leathers and helmet, hair color, sex (no, thank-you!), facial features...) he spooks and decides to take off...he heads up the frontage-road extension...small problem...it goes east about 1 mile, then you HAVE to turn left, pass under the interstate and you "T" into a county road that has the next nearest intersection either back west at the ramp area where he had just come from, or one more mile east, in a little town that's about to become the 4th of 5 agencies NOW involved in this chase...

Sure enough...I head up the road where he disappeared, turned left and crossed under the interstate and was greeted by a State Trooper at the "T" - he guided me towards the right and said, "Pay attention to the officers on the scene, but stay back."

I drive up, pull over and I'm greeted at my window by a county officer...he's got paperwork already for me to fill out...numbnutz's bike is on its side, his helmet is across the ditch in a field and he's sitting under a tree with bracelets on...

No less than 8 cars are on the scene...

Turns out the little pube was only 17, it was HIS DAD'S BIKE, and dad was up north in Eau Claire county someplace getting pulled over by the State Troopers to get him to come on down and deal w/his kid.

The kid? He apparently had stopped but he didn't get the bike shut off FAST ENOUGH for the officers that were out of their cars...they slammed him and the bike to the ground before anything more could have happened...

I guess the site of a few hand-guns, yelling cops and an idling bike would cause some confusion as to where the key was to shut it off...

Didn't matter...

Cops - 1
Dumbass Pube - 0
Prize - One Super-pissed Father - to the loser!

Now, what caused all of this fun and frivolity?

Pube-boy was speeding...32 in a 25...he didn't want to get caught getting a ticket on his dad's bike...

DIGRESSION AHEAD!!!

And this is the type of person that's capable of voting for the next leader of the free world in less than 2 years?

God help us, 'cause we be doin' it all wrong!

LUVMBDiesels 05-09-2008 08:29 AM

I was going up the Garden State parkway with the family in the Suburban when two idiots on crotch rockets came up at 100+ I had to do emergency evasive manuvers to get out of their way as they were taking up most of the two lanes. I then camly reached for my cell and dialed 911. gave the staties a description and where they were. About five miles up there they were in the middle of a pile of trooper cars. Turns out they were wanted as well :D

Moral of the story -- If you are wanted by the cops ditch the rocket and steal a Toyota pick up or something inconspicuous.

Also if you piss enough people off one of them is gonna dial 911
