Hurricane Season Prognostications 2008

Has anyone compared these guys to the accuracy rate of Jeanne Dixon?

Warm sea-surface temperatures combined with favorable winds should make this season “well above average,” said Colorado State University forecasters Dr. William Gray and Philip Klotzbach. They predict that there will be 15 storms in all, including eight hurricanes and four storms that could reach “major” status with Category 3 winds or higher.

Last season was supposed to be the worst ever. I'll try for that again. Either way it'll be global warming.

This year because of the man made global warming, it will be so bad that I predict 200 cat V storms. You people best just kiss your butt goodbye and give me all your money.

well, time to fill those sand bags.

I need to look into something to cover the house windows with. Last major hurricane season we used 1/2" plywood. I recently saw some heavy duty PVC coated fabric covers that allow in light.

As a guy who lives on the Gulf Coast, I can say to you with 100% certainty that the forecasters DON'T KNOW JACK SQUAT! They haven't known a damn thing since I started paying attention to them about ten years ago. What comes will come.

From Armageddononline.org (some name, eh?)

A 69 percent chance that at least one major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. coastline in 2008 (the long-term average probability is 52 percent).
A 45 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall on the U.S. East Coast, including the Florida Peninsula (the long-term average is 31 percent)
A 44 percent chance that a major hurricane will make landfall on the Gulf Coast from the Florida Panhandle west to Brownsville (the long-term average is 30 percent).

The team also predicted above-average major hurricane landfall risk in the Caribbean

The first prediction using the scientific method was in 1900, Galveston. The forecaster predicted a slight storm, IIRC.

I read Isaac's Storm and they thought the Hurricane was over Florida, and when they did realize the storm was quite sizable but in the Gulf, no one wanted to use the word "Hurricane" because it might scare people. Brilliant. Don't save us from the hurricane, save us from the idiots calling the shots.

Yeah, that's the story. I've wanted to read the book. What did you think of it?

Isn't that sort of like using the term "economic downturn" when really it's a recession/depression?
Yes, there are times when some sort of tact is in order...but when it comes to something that is a bit more important, the proper word with the proper impact, should be used.
