There's a guy here in So.Fla who is doing something similar.

Trouble is, from what he's shown on Craigslist, 99+% of his bicycles are makes and models that are in no way safe to actually ride. Anything from Huffy, Magna, Mongoose, Schwinn, Roadmaster, Triax tends to have unsafe, substandard construction and bottom of the barrel parts that fail and leave you stranded.

Two different friends of mine have had parts of their brand new Wal Mart bikes snap off while crossing intersections and send them flying onto the ground in traffic.

I always flag his posts down whenever I see them, to prevent someone else from having something happen. Imagine what a second-hand bicycle that was that quality to begin with is going to be like.

I own two bikes, my girlfriend two also. Off-road, it's a Specialized for me; on-road, it's a Motobecane with a carbon fiber front fork. I wouldn't touch anything put out by the brands I listed with a 10 foot pole no matter how much it cost -- case in point, Triax makes a "road bike" that's probably equally unfit for actual use.

I have an old Schwinn from the early 1980s, and it is a very decent bike, with quality components from the era, actually it was made by Giant, for Schwinn.

Hey! How'd you get that picture of my yard?

Actually, I've been riding my bike a lot the last few months and I'm losing weight and getting in shape. Ladies, take a number . . .

I've been playing with that idea. However, Kuan is supposed to help me get the bike tuned-up. So I blame Kuan.

funny you would mention bicycles

I pulled my 12 year old Bianchi out and rode it today for the first time in years. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed riding. Three times in my life I have gotten out on it after a long time and remembered how much I love to ride. I rode to college for 3 of the 4 years, commuted to work (11-1/2 miles one way) from 1992 through 1997. Anybody ever have a water bottle freeze and couldn't get any water out of while riding? During that time it was not unusual at all to ride for 300-400 miles/week. It was fun stirring up those old familiar feelings this afternoon. I plan on trying to get out on it every afternoon for awhile.

I think I'll stick with my 15 year old Trek.

Specialized for me every day (I ride to work) and a mid-80's Peugeot road bike for the occasional weekend ride. I love the old Peugeot, but I would like to see what a newer road bike feels like. Money is the issue at the moment...

Oh yeah -- that picture is obscene. What a mess.

a friend of mine bought 2 bikes at wal-mart,he was bragging about how little he paid for em,well about 2 weeks later his girlfriend was riding over to a friends house and the handlebars came right off in her hands.she ended up crashing and broke her arm, which if you knew her you would think it was pretty funny.
and i will agree about buying those brands listed,if they are new,but as for me i really like the old schwinns say pre 70.i have 5 of em 2 of em are 3 spd,2 are 5spd,and a 2 speed schwinn twinn.

Yeah I think once this rainy weather clears out I'll take my bike out for the first time since I got a car! Diesel is to expensive time to use the bike for short trips.

I'm using diesel prices as an excuse, I really want to get in better shape.

I don't think Schwinn, Huffy or such are inherently unsafe, but they tend to be assembled by people who have absolutely no clue what they are doing and then get no maintenance. Try that with a car and see what happens.

I'll stick with my old trusty Italian bike, a 1967 Atala. It does have a Guerciotti fork on it, since the steering tube broke on the original fork long ago. Also cantilever brakes. Mafac brakes, in case you're really old-school and have heard of them. Those are to fit around the off-road tubular tires.

I also have a much newer Mercian road bike, but it currently lacks handlebars. It and the Atala are both handmade frames, but the Mercian is from England. Then there's the machine-made Diamond Back which is not nearly as much fun as the Atala off-road, but it is much more stout.

I'd hate to see the water under that pool cover.

I used to ride about 4 or 5 thousand miles a year. At some point in the late 90's
I stopped. Guess it's time to dust off the old Klein Mountain Bike slap some street tires
on it and start riding again. Unfortuantely I live about 25 miles from work, a bit far for commuting.
