Angry Not planing to fly to your vacation this summer, are you?

American Airlines to trim capacity, add new bag fee

American Airlines parent company AMR Corp. said it will cut more flights from its domestic schedules -- by some estimates more than 500 -- in the fourth quarter, trim its workforce and the size of its fleet, and add a $15 fee for passengers' first checked bag in an effort to keep from drowning in record-high jet fuel prices.

... and oil is up again

I won't be flying anyway because of my little kids, but the prices aren't helping.

Ticket price, fuel surcharges and now checked baggage fees? I guess it's either that or the airlines will all go bankrupt.

I still like Southwest . . . . , as both a customer and a shareholder. I've heard a lot of horror stories about American.

Southwest was smart with their Fuel Hedging.

I flew UPS airlines on my trip to the Dominican Republic. They fly passengers there, remove the seats and fill it with cargo for the ride back.

It was the most comfortable flight I've been on (considering I've never flown 1st class). There was enough space between the rows of seats that the window seat passenger could exit the row of seats without touching any of the other passengers.

That, and their slow, controlled expansion to more and more destinations is a smart move. They didn't expand out of control like several other companies, which is a winning strategy.

I sensed that you, too, had ulterior motives behind your enthusiasm for Southwest. Well, that's partly why I bought it in the first place.

What about the return trip? Do you have to ride back in one of those boxes?

HA! No, we flew a different airline home.

I'm not sure how UPS works all the details, but the gate attendant told us that they do mostly cargo flights, and passenger flights help make up for flights with light cargo loads.

I refuse to check a bag, if it won't fit in my carry-on and laptop bag I won't bring it. I know my luggage will get lost plus I hate waiting around for pick up. I'm not one of those people whose carry-on is so bloated it won't fit in the overhead either. I generally just try to limit my business travel to 3-4 days so that many shirts and slacks plus a t-shirt and shorts and I'm good to go. And hope that it's warm enough that I don't need long sleeves or a jacket (I need to make sure I have enough room for trinkets/shirts to bring home for the kids).
