Deductibles....

I am curious. What deductibles do you peoples carry? Liability only?

I work with Insurance, and had a talk with a client today about how deductibles can have a pretty good impact on premiums.

Which got me wondering, what do you guys carry in terms of a deductible?

Ill start off.... Liability only on the 300TE, and the 190E, but carry $750 deductibles on the G500 and SL600. Keeps the premiums low, but keeps expenses low in the event of a wreck...

Hi Justin, are you back now? Have a good time in Berdoo?

Back when I was a young man (during the Punic wars) I was an automobile insurance adjuster for physical damage claims for that company with all thos A's in its name

It was explained that the reason that companies would not sell zero deductible insurance, either for comprehensive or collision coverage, because the companies would go out of business if they did.

Imagine having to pay to fix every single tiny rock chip, ding or blemish that happened to car. No can do.

In those days they even made the adjusters charge "betterment" on things like stolen batteries.

The policyholder would come in and file a report his car battery got stolen;
we had to take the report and ask how old the battery was and then deduct the betterment for its use.

If it was an 11 month old battery, we would have to deduct or prorate the amount the use they got out of it, and we would give them the money to buy an 11 month old batter not a new one.

This, of course, would elicit howls of rage from the policy holder.

The old ladies would wail, "OOOOOOH someone stole my battery, I want a new battery!!!!!!!!"

And the worst one of all "WHYYYYYYYYYYY do I even buy insurance?"

I am pretty sure they don't follow that policy nowadays. It is the worst public relations disaster I ever saw.

People would ask me, oh, you work for THAT company? Tell me, are they fair? How do they treat the customers? I would ALWAYS reply: they are like all my old girfriends: TIGHT, but FAIR!!! lol...

I think I've got $1000 deductibles on most of my cars. It does seem to make a big difference. If you just had major medical insurance rather than regular health care insurance, it would be a lot cheaper. It's no different with cars. Small claims are more likely ad more freqquent than large ones for most of us.

Yes, I am back. It was cool, and there was not alot of traffic. Perfect time for a road trip... Aside from the $4.00 a gallon gas. And why the hell is gas cheaper in LA??!!?!

Anyways... Back on topic. What do you carry deductible-wise on that SEC?

We have no option to give a $0 deductible. The lowest I can give is $100.

I don't have any collision insurance on my SEC. Once I've put more money into it, I might get some. Right now I only have liability and comprehensive.

Let me know what it is if you find it. I've only found one that has them for my SEC.

Some auto insurance companies are offering various discounts, including "zero deductibles" for customers that have not had claims for a certain period. "Accident foregivness" seems to be another new discount being touted.

'03 Odyssey-Full coverage including glass, $500 deductible
'00 Wrangler-Full coverage including glass, $500 deductible
'80 300TD-Liability + uninsured motorist only

I should really raise the deductible to $750, it'd probably save me a few bucks. I'm not even sure what the uninsured motorist coverage on the TD gets me but it costs $50/mo.

The max in Texas is $1000 - I have that on all my vehicles. I chose that route because I'm accident free since 1989, and I can easily afford the $1000.

$100 deductible comprehensive and $250 collision deductible on BOTH the SEC and the new Subaru

My vehicles, the van and MB, are too OLD to be covered under comp./coll....

The agent says to look into collector/antique coverage...

Problem is: I don't care too much about the driving restrictions...so many miles a year, only certain times of the year you can drive it, etc....

I guess, if I finally cave in and go for the collector plates on the MB, THEN I'll go the "old car" route and go for comp./coll..

In WI., the driving restriction on Collector Plates is the month of January...most years there's too much salt in Dec./Feb. to be crazy enough to pull your nice car out. But the recent years have had clean-enough roads that even in Dec. and through into March, we've been able to drive salt-free up here... (GO GLOBAL WHINING! )

Oh well...
