Couriers lost magnetic tapes containing the personal details of 4.5 million people who had dealt with the Bank of New York Mellon, it has emerged. The incident happened three months ago, but has only surfaced after legal papers were filed in the state of Connecticut.

Oh yeah that just happend to the state school system in CT. Someone got their laptop stolen with thousands of students personal info on it.

Thats why I never use my SS number, SCSU wants it all the time for BS stuff. When they ask me for it I'm like nope, look me up with my name.

Missus MTI received the notice from BNY Mellon yesterday that she is entitled to one year of free credit monitoring because of the lost tapes. When she went to register, we chuckled that the site wanted her SoSec no. as part of the registration. Since mailing the notice, they apparently upped the deal to two years.
