Need help selling Camry on Ebay

I've bought many things on ebay and sold one small item.

Now, we're selling the '92 Camry and I need advise from someone who's done it on ebay.
I have lots of pics. Everything about the car will be said up front. No funny business.
Pretty much the mechanic says it needs a new head gasket and for a 16 year old car, we've had enough.
Everything else works except for the head gasket situation and the cassette player eats tapes.
New exhaust, struts, brakes, tires, A/C is fine.
V6, cruise, power windows.
Nice cloth interior, never smoked in. Maroon with grey interior.
We wanted a new(er) car.

There seem to be lots of options(i.e buy it now, reserve vs. non-reserve,make an offer). Fees associated with the different options?

What is the best way to show the pictures? I see some auctions where only one small pic shows up and it's useless, but I also want it to be simple without a lot of things needed to be loaded in order to show the pics.

What's the best method of payment to accept? I'm fine with Paypal for small items but a little leery about a car, especially with liability associated with any title transfer. Theoretically, they could pay by paypal with a credit card, then reverse it/dispute it after DMV paperwork has been processed.

Some friendly advise would be appreciated.

I have sold 3 cars on eBay. I typically request a smallish deposit via PayPal (less than $500) and the balance is due in cash at my bank. Once the cash is deposited, I sign the title over, pull the plates, and that's it.

How realistic are you on the price of a 16 year old car with a blown headgasket?

That is not possible. And there will always be some jerk out there to prove it.
Make sure you take measures to cover your ass on that issue.

Other than that, I’d say thorsen has it covered.

I see the phrase "sold as-is, where is" appear on a lot of the professional car dealer advertisements on eBay. You'll definitely want to include that after you disclose all known issues on the vehicle. I think that will provide you with the necessary ass covering.

The fees for selling on eBay Motors can be found here: Motors fees.

At a bare minimum, you're looking at $90 to successfully sell a car there - $40 insertion fee, then a $50 transaction services fee if it sells.

When I list something on eBay, I prefer to supply my item description in HTML (composed using free software), and include relatively small pictures that are "clickable links" to much larger, nicer pictures - all of them hosted somewhere other than eBay. If that seems like too much work, of course, you don't have to do it that way - eBay will be happy to host your pictures for a price.

I guess my first question would be this: why use eBay to try to sell this particular vehicle? I think of eBay as a way to get nationwide (or worldwide) exposure for something really special. If I had a relatively common car with some issues, I'd be thinking of Craigslist first, with the expectation of a sale to someone relatively local to me.

My two cents.

Thanks for the responses so far. We're thinking of Ebay for the larger exposure, compared to Craig's list.
The car is sitting at a garage where the mechanic would do the work and we trust him, but don't have the desire to put it into the car to be fixed.
We figure we'll try Ebay first. This may go up tonight, but I'm still looking forward to as much input as possible from the forum.

You probably don't need the larger exposure for a 16 yo car with a blown head gasket. I would seriosly doubt you have much interest from more than a 300 mile radious of your home. Try Craiglist to get your feet wet.

I'd definitely try Craigslist first. I'm not sure a Camry with a blown headgasket is the kind of car anyone would be willing to fly cross-country to buy, so a vast majority of folks who look at the listing will probably write it off as too far away. I typically look at eBay to find local "beaters" on the cheap, and have NOT had good luck selling project cars on eBay. Craigslist is regional, and free.

I'm looking for a very cheap winter beater; but since its kind of far from me and I would have to pick it up with a trialer...

Whats your bottom price?

Its going to probably cost close to $100 to ebay it when its all said and done...

Don't waste money on ebay selling a old Camry. Why would someone
buy it and pay shipping on a old common car? If it was a rare car worth
more OK

Try craigslist

That's what I was thinking. It's hard to sell a car with a known bad head gasket.
