Anning Nitrogen to your tires.

I just read that this will add 2 to 3 MPG.
Has anyone tried this?

you wont get better mileage by adding nitrogen to your tires. The same rule applies if you were to add air to a under inflated tire. A properly inflated tire will give you better gas mileage. the only benefit you will get with adding nitrogen is your tires will be less prone to losing pressure over time because the nitrogen molecule is larger. You will also get less corrosion inside the tire because it is dryer.

Tires oxidize from the inside out and N2 helps prevent this. Studies have shown that N2 greatly increases the life of the tires.

Nitrogen may not increase your MPGs but it creates a wonderfully creamy head on draught beer.

How do you go about getting nitrogen put into your tires? Can you buy it in a can or do you have to go to certain tire stores to get it, or what?

John Doe 06-06-2008 09:31 AM

You can get it at any tire store where I live. Costs $6/tire.

Thanks. I'll have to get some tires for the SEC mounted soon, so Ill ask then.

Unless you drive more than 10K a year, in which case the tires wear from the outside faster than they could ever deteriorate from the inside.

You gonna ask a tire salesman about nitrogen? Make sure to get the undercoating put on your tires too;):D:D

It would be very easy to look up the thermal expansion rate of N2. The lexus dealer told me it was waaaaaaaay less than air so basically don't worry about any pressure change, however, after driving my wife's car 200 mi in 90+ degree weather, I noticed the tires were over-inflated (with pure nitrogen in them from the dealer:rolleyes:). Thus, I released some nitrogen from the tires. When it cools off, I will fill them back up with air from my compressor.

I'm just having them mounted there, not buying them there. I get your point, though. They have nothing to gain by helping you to extend the life of your tires.

I prefer nitrus oxide.

Dee8go 06-06-2008 10:55 AM

Oh, I was thinking of Nitrous dragsters, not poppers.

Yeah but you want them to wear better on the outside.
