No Power, Life Sucks!

Power went off for the second time today. First time was from 4 to 5. This time, it's been off since 8:45. At least those touch typing classes back in high school are paying off!

Power was out here for 7 hours on Friday. Transformer went kaboom. When the crew replaced the transformer, they fubared the cable TV lines, so no TV for 24 hours.

The power goes off so often here that I wired a generator into the mains that runs off the propane tank... I've had to use it a couple times for a warm shower in the morning.

Tell me about it..... Our sub-station is in the middle of the damn woods. Their is always a squirrel, opossum or raccoon bridging the transformer and popping a fuse. Twice last week. They really need to do something about it. Though, the sound of 28.8KV going through a piece if meat is pretty amazing.

Powerpig- Give me a jingle if it doesn't go back on and you guys can come over, jump in the pool and partake of some adult beverages. If you like we can even throw a sacrifice or two on the grill.

"Fuzzy Fuses"

And they smell and clean up...horribly!

I don't have the experience of AC-Fuzzy Fuses, but the DC-Fuzzy Fuses usually aren't identifiable until you collect a few pieces and start to "put them back together" just to determine what it once was...

BTW, does anyone remember the "HOTDOGGER" cooker? Put your dog(s) between two elements and ***ZAP!*** - cooked dog(s)? And that was done with household-level voltage and current...if you left the dog(s) unattended, the smell/mess you had?

As for Higher-powered DC-Fuzzy Fuses...

Once you've done an "incident" - certain smells and other characteristics "pop out" when you run across the situation again, later on...

OH! Also, don't forget snakes... I've "pieced" a few of those together over the years...

BTW, a 6KV "pop" is MUCH MORE FORGIVING (to the cleaning person, not the "fuse") than a 32KV "pop" is...

The last time mine went out, I started to call the power company and then realized my phone doesn't work when there's no power to the cable modem. Sometimes I find it very disconcerting how utterly dependent we've become on electricity.

If you rely on a cable modem for phone, your provider should be required to include a backup battery with your unit. Ours didn't until we requested in though...

A $50 UPC is worth keeping your cable phone/voip running during an outage

Maybe I should check into that. I never really thought about it until it wsn't working. Once it started working again, I stopped thinking about it . . . .

Okay, it's on the "To Do" list now.
