Bums
Do you think protests like this will lower the price these truckers have to pay for fuel?

There's a remote possibility they could get some relief on the political side by getting their government to reduce some of the tax on the fuel, but they won't get anywhere on the underlying economic reasons why fuel has gone up so much.

I don't know, but that hammock idea is pretty cool. I wonder if he has an exercise routine using his front bumper like Sylvester Stallone in "Over the Top".

It's the audacity of trucker hope.

They would be better off figuring out how to deal with high fuel prices. Maybe there are to many trucks on the road and the fleet needs to shrink to drive shipping costs up to return profits.
Certianly in this country long distance, IE across country is foolish. Rail is a much better solution. Capitalism is a cruel mistress.

Well I think the pressure to get prices down will come from the Spanish government. The truckers have really turned life upside down for people, and the people will put pressure on the govt. If you read the article you'll see that stores are running out of food because of this strike, in some areas half the gas stations have run out of fuel. Tourist areas are suffering. Tourism is hurting and this is high season.
Car dealers aren't getting cars, etc, etc. |

And lately, I've been seeing TV ads touting rail transport. But have you ever tried to get something shipped by rail? If you aren't GE or GM, they aren't interested. In August 1997, I tried to get a car shipped from Oklahoma City to Alexandria Virginia. When I called the local rail depot, they all but laughed at me and told me to hire a truck! I flew back home, returned with my tow-dolly and towed the car back myself. Happy Motoring, Mark

Rail transport got very unpopular for a while in the United States. The railroads were able to survive (with some help from the federal government-which also helped get them into the mess in the first place) by sticking to what they could do A LOT better than trucks, namely transport very large tonnages over long distances at low prices. Their system isn't really set up to handle customers who want to ship less than a carload of something, though with the rising price of fuel, the interest level of small-shipment customers may rise, and the railroads may try to take advantage of opportunities in that market. I'd like to see it happen. Trains are cool.
