stupid automatic transmissions
 

seriously, wtf.

I'm looking at vw TDI's for sale in my state and all I can find are automatics!! Previously all I could find were 5 speeds... I don't want a slush box in a TDI... I want the 5 speed.. I only drive a stupid automatic because that is what came in my car... I remember this quote "Automatics are for the elderly and left leg amputees" i don't know who said it but... jeeez I hate my automatic transmission.

I've always found transmissions to be somewhat more difficult than engines to build, and I've only rebuilt manual transmissions.

If those are DSG transmissions, they are no ordinary slushbox. I got mine with a 5-speed though.

I went out with a friend on a test drive in a mini cooper with the "mini-matic" steptronic transmission... it shifted slower with the paddle shifters than he can with his 6 speed.

Thats a crappy system.



The VW DSG is awesome. Shifts smooth, and fast.

well if a VW automatic can get mid 40's on the highway, which is what I drive.. I might have to jump on one sooner or later. This is of course a TDI, but the thought of 50's with the 5 speed intrigues me... Plus my fuel costs per year, even with the automatic would be almost $1500 less!.. It costs me $3500 a year to fuel the benz, and climbing!

I would still take a good look at the cost per mile....


My friend on this board has a Toyota that gets 25mps on regular, and his sister has a VW TDi that gets like 35 mpgs....

We looked at it closely, and did some math, and the Toyota comes up considerably less per mile.

The TDI automatic version gets BETTER fuel mileage than the same car with a manual transmission.

I'll second the DSG.

The strange thing I find with our '06 Jetta is when Tab drives it she is 'all throttle and brake' and gets 44-45 mpg each tank. When I drive it gently I always manage to end up with 42-43 mpg.

Watch out for the timing belt R&R. It requires special tools and knowledge to do the job. Not cheap.

To bad your limiting your search to your state. I didn't when I was searching for one and found my TDI in Michigan. Had a great road trip back to Cali.

I don't like manuals in daily drivers. I only want them in trucks and real balls out sports cars. Shifting in traffic is a PITA, I'd rather let the trans do it.

But for a work truck or a sports car a stick is the only way to go, none of that flappy padal gear box BS.

From what I've read on the TDI site, the DSG's can be quite expensive to replace, if yours breaks.
The new TDI's should be out within the next month or two....maybe that will bring down the price of used ones.

I saw two on ebay, that had sticks.

I'll take a stick please, the more gears the better.
