Anyone know anything about scooters?

I just got a 1987 Honda Elite CH80 from my dad, someone sold it to him for $100. I got it to run for about 10 seconds and it cut out, can't get it to start anymore, it has spark. I have very little experience working on gas engines and the carburetor has me completely stumped...

Edit: Took off the air filter, a bunch of gas leaked out as soon as the cover came off. I got it to fire a few times without the filter on, but it still won't stay running. A shot of WD40 as starting fluid up the intake makes it run for a second or so...

Edit 2: Followed a tip to choke it with my hand over the intake, it started for s second and my hand was immediately soaked with gas

You need to take the bowl off of the carb and clean everything up with Carb Cleaner from your local auto parts store. You need to clean up the bowl and float assy and the needle valve assembly inside the carb. I don't have a pic but it is pretty straight forward once you are holding the carb in your hand.

I had one of those once, they are real nice. Congrats.

I seem to remember the carb was a rube goldberg affair, and that I ended up buying a nos carb off ebay for around $60.00. The Honda dealer prices were pretty high, they wanted almost $400 for it.

let's establish if it's a float bowl carb or diaphragm affair, which are more susceptible to particulates and consequently less forgiving.

I'll do a search on the make/model and see if I can find out anything.

Have you twiddled the high speed/idle screws in and out if so equipped?

On 1987 and up the main bleed screw setting is 1 1/2 turns out.
Apparently the stock carb is 15mm and several websites give instructions on getting more speed and power by fitting larger 20-25 mm Mikunis with an adapter plate.

Let's get it running with the original one first!

I managed to get it running, both jets and about every passage in the carb were completely clogged, and the bowl had a nice thick layer of stuff in it... Looked like it had been sitting for a few years with a full tank of gas (none in there when we got it) so it must have all gummed up in the carb...

Them and fat girls are fun to ride but you don't want your friends seeing you on either. That is how the joke goes.

For 100+ miles/gallon, my friends can laugh if they want... I'll be the one laughing at the pump

I'll post some pics once I find my camera.

Just about 100% of scooters that I have ever run accross that would not run had the exact same issue.

Mine is a 1994 Yamaha Jog. Around town I always take the scooter instead of the HD Road King. The scooter is a blast to scoot around town on.

It has a 4 HP Cushman Husky engine. Model 17M71, 4 stroke, single cylinder, 4 HP @ 3500 RPM, 14.80 CI (243 CC), air cooled.

It was purchased from a friend for $10 when I was in grade school, rode it around the neighborhood for a few years and parked it in a barn. In the late 1990's my father was clearing out the barn and told me to take it or he'll junk it. After about $2500 of authentic/accurate parts, paint etc., its back to its original glory.

By the way, it is more fun than a fat girl.

Maybe at the pump but what if they splash you on when they see you? Not saying I have done that intentionally but while driving and passing, it might have happened.
