For my NoVa friends... BMW help needed

Hey guys,

Well the wife is going to make the trek down to WV from NY this weekend in the BMW (hopefully all goes well THIS time and she makes it) My question for you is this. The car has developed an exhaust leak in the Y pipe that feeds the cat. Rather than buy a new cat for more than the car is worth, do you know of anyplace that would be open Saturday that would weld in a new straight pipe? The car will be registered in WV which has no emissions inspections so it should not be a problem to just run a pipe. My range for Saturday would be a circle from Frederick, MD to Manassas, Va and out to Berkeley Springs, WV

Thanks a lot!

Oh and to stop this from becomming a discussion about pollution, the car only gets about 2000 miles a year on it and it being a 1984 I am sure the cat is clogged and not working anylonger anyway

You didn't mention what sort of BMW it is, so I'll assume it's the one from your signature. If that's the case just about any exhaust shop should be able to weld in a generic aftermarket cat for less than $150. I know ones here that can do it for less than $100. Your own feelings on emissions aside, it's still in violation of federal law to remove the cat, so most shops won't want to. Even the shops I know of who might be convinced to do so, it would take more money to convince them than it would to just replace the cat.

It is in a bad spot where the collector flanges come together forming a "V"

The 528e has a set of dual exhaust manifolds that look like three tube headers but are cast iron. I was thinking that a shop could fab up a set of collector flanges and then put a pipe down the muffler flange. The muffler was replaced last fall.

Yeah, I don't know how convenient Sterling is to you, but Andreas did a good job and he was pretty reasonable. I just had him cut out my rusted resonators and weld straight pipe in place of them.
