WW2 Nazi tunnel in Jersey UK

Hi all,

not sure if anyone might have come across this, but i linked to it on a forum over here.

Story relates to Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, just off the NW coast of France. The islands, though under British Sovereignty, were occupied by the Germans during the war. Its a looonnngggg thread, but makes for great reading - be prepared to give up a couple of hours work

It sure would!

I visited Jersey as a kid with my folks in the late 70s. Its a small island, only 9miles by 5. One of the hilights for me at the time was Elizabeth Castle, built in the late 1500s. It was once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh, but more recently used as a German fortification. When we were there it had German vehicles, uniforms and other memorabilia from WW2.

I remeber my dad hired a small car to get around and was told that there was no spare tyre. When my dad enquired as to why, he was told that "the island is so small, just ring and we'll be with you in twenty minutes"

Interesting and certainly long thread, like a adventure book.

Well, in Arkansas, just North of Texas, they used to let the inmates run the prison. That was Cummins Prison Farm. Anybody remember the big expose' they did on that in Life magazine back inthe early seventies? They were digging up the bodies of "escaped" inmates for months . . . .

I don't know all the details of this, but my stepfather was a Lt. in a Texas POW camp, an assigment he got when he developed an eye infection that kept him from being with his unit as they were decimated in the Battle of the Bulge.

He said those guys were so clever, they could pretty much escape at will but didn't really want to. They'd sneak out and go to town, and the guards would give them a few hours to blow off steam, patronize the bars and prostitutes etc. before they'd go pick them up. In return the POWs didn't screw with them too much, something they were aptly capable of doing.

Many of them stayed in America after the war.

I've read that in a number of different places. The German POWs sent to POW camps in the US tended to have life a lot better than their fellow soldiers still back in Europe and fighting in the war.
