Adjusting to changes of that magnitude is tougher the older we get. My last (or maybe most recent...) Earth-crusher was when I was 45 and it took 3-4 years to fully accept it. Over a decade later my perspective is such that I cannot help but believe it was for the best.

Your going work as an employee???????????..........

I recently went through a similar experience, finally taking the plunge to work for my dad's company.

Nobody wants to shell out 30 dollars an hour so their kid can learn Tennis anymore. Go figure. I also had a nice car sales/flipping business starting, but nobody has any disposable income.

The steady paycheck sure is nice, especially for a college student like me, but I sure do miss the independence. I was 20 minutes late for work today to which my dad told me, " You are abusing your position here." One very neat aspect of the job is the 4 day work week during the summer. Sure the days are long, but having every Friday off is great. I've gone from shopping for cars and dodging stray balls to making uniform orders, handling unemployment claims, and other random work. I spent 6 hours Tuesday in front of a laminator. I guess I could be digging ditches.

Thanks very much. When I was young, I was egotistical, brash and inept at interpersonal relationships. I am a little better at that all now and I hope I can learn to play in the large sandbox before I piss off too many folks.

In my second interview I was asked about dealing with the lack of freedom that I have when self employed.

I thought about quoting the old line from "Bobby Magee"....."Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose"......but decided against it.

Yep I hear you. Being self employed is nice, but their is something to be said for a nice paycheck every Friday while doing work you don't mind. Steady income is nice when you have bills looming and are looking for the next project.

Luckly around here real estate seems to be holding its own, just things are slower. All the sub contractors we use are slower, and want their money like right away.

Get used to it, its going to be this way for at least next year, maybe longer.

Let us know how the new job is once you get settled in. I'm sure you'll do just fine.

Also....all this time I didn't know you had a Ferrari. What year / model is it?

I've never tried to advertise it, here or in real life. I always figured a Mercedes was polarizing enough. I bought it a long time ago for not much money and fixed it up a little at at time and the last few years it has gotten so valuable it really makes no sense to keep when selling it can help the houshold out financially so much.

It is a 59 pf coupe. Its very original except for the paint and interior. It even has the original fuel lines and spark plug wires. Its a graceful car with a profile that resembles a '56 Lincoln Continental but with a Ferrari grill and mgb look alike tail lights.

Its red. But originally was black. Interior is tannish leather but was red originally and the carpet is the original red.

Ironically with the new job I probably could have held onto it but the news came like a half a day too late.

Oh well, I will probably get something interesting that I can drive whenever I want to later......maybe one of those "cheap" Ferrari 308 2+2's with the v8s and four weber two barrels.

For now I am going to spend a little of the money fixing up my autocrosser and pay a lot of debt down.
