Lightbulb 235 mpg VW 2-seater

VW is planning to build a 235 mpg 2-seat car in 2010. It features lots of carbon fiber, magnesium, titanium and aluminum for low weight and an aerodynamic shape.

The production vehicle is likely to feature a 2-cylinder turbo diesel. The engine automatically turns off when you stop and restarts when you press the accelerator.

Wow, that looks pretty cool. Holy crap a Cd of .16!

This is just meant to generate buzz for VW and give them a "green" image, not an everyday person's car.

I ran across that one a couple of years ago. I got the same reaction from everyone that I showed it to... "You will get run over in that thing!" Of course that was two years ago, I wonder what they would say now?

Maybe using the headlights cuts the fuel economy in half

The getting run over thing, is not so much of a problem in Europe, as it is here, since they do not have an abundance of behemoth vehicles like we do.
I would think that a Fiat Uno/Punto, a Nissan Micra, or a Smart, vs. the [VW] in a crash would give you fairly even odds.

It looks like an updated version of a Messerschmitt KR200!

just so everyone knows, I have seen this posted on a couple forums, with the weight of the vehicle being 660, plus driver, at 13.5 ft lbs it would have about the same amount of power as a diesel commercial truck pulling a load.

Which is my way of saying that it will be slow, but it will be able to do over 65MPH, especially if it's so aerodynamic.

I'm basing this off of the fact that I drive an international 4900 for a living and it has 660 ft lbs of torque and can weigh up to 35,000lbs fully loaded (truck+fuel).

I friend of mine actually got run over in her Mini by a garbage truck! Lucky for her it just took out the hood and RIGHT front leaving her in the driver's seat scared, mad, and intact. Garbage truck driver said he never saw her on his right when he made a wide right turn...

I would also hate to be the passenger in that car. probably very bouncy and NO crumple zone between you and the truck coming up behind you

Just what I was thinking. They took an old Messerschmitt and painted it black. There's one of those Messerschmitts here in Denver at the Forney Museum.

I think the Messerschmitt is a three wheeler... This VW has four wheels. I wonder if they sould make it a trike and have it registered as a Motorcycle like the Messy was back in the day -- taxes in Europe are much lower for a motorcycle than for a four wheeled car. See the old Morgan three wheeler for more details

I think you're right. Although there's one of those small vehicles that looks like a 3 wheeler but it has two rear wheels mounted very close together.
Here are some pictures of 3 wheelers:
