PBS "War of the World" Tonight

Sure to draw some interesting comments.

Condensed version of a UK six hour series "Host Niall Ferguson calls World War II a "tainted victory" due to a devil's pact with Stalin and the Allies' use of air power to deliberately incinerate hundreds of thousands of unarmed civilians."

The series explores the paradox of 20th-century industrial progress, set against the war and misery that made those years among the bloodiest in history. Mr. Ferguson blames the colliding forces of waning empires as well as economic instability and racial and ethnic antipathies.

Should be loads of laughs . . .

Hmmm. That sounds pretty interesting. I'll tune in.

Ferguson is an interesting author. I've read a couple of his books after seeing him interviewed on C-Span. He uses "counterfactual" concepts a lot in his teaching to the annoyance of more staid historians.

He's not the only one recently to point out the dichotomy between the intentions of the western allies - going to war to save Poland, and the reality of allying with Stalin and thus selling Poland down the Volga. Normal Davies "No Simple victory" deals with this topic as well.

- Peter.

War, like politics, makes for strange bedfellows.

As Sherman responded to a southern lady who complained about his men foraging and stealing food from southern civilians:

"War is cruelty. There is no use trying to reform it. The crueler it is, the sooner it will be over."
