New GM Car...thoughts from the MB crew?

hey everyone,

I saw this in the paper the other day. GM is launching a new car at the plant that I work at...I have to admit. If they keep the design that Car and Driver has pictures of it'll be pretty good. I just wanted to see what the crew here thought of it...I can't say that I'm fond of the name, I think it should be something more agressive:

Looks like any other car on the market too me. Chevy isn't going to attract many buyers looking for something different with that design.

Looks like a FWD with a Transvestite engine. I'll give $100 for a functioning one. My usual price. After all, in 10 years, parts are going to be obsolete.

Talking The Chevy Cruze ? ? ?

The name evokes '70s memories of Pablo Cruse:

"Whatcha gonna do/ When she says good-bye?
"Whatcha gonna do/ When she is gone?"

And somehow I don't think Americans are going to go for that jangly zebra paint scheme. (Okay, my tongue was firmly planted in my cheek on that one.)

At least they're thinking small cars, which will have a chance at selling in a world of $4+ a gallon gas.

yeah. i really dont know where they come up with the names of these cars. I like Mercedes and BMW's number naming system. Been the same for yearrrs.

I mean we all know GM isnt going to Wow the industry with a product that everyone is going to jump on and dump their current cars. They're a pretty slow lumbering giant. But comparing this new "cruze" to the current "cobalt" I like the design better...

One thing that angers me about their cars today, especially in the new Impala's is the monsterous A and C pillars...I mean do they really need to be that huge? I once saw a w124 a-pillar hold up an entire w201 car.

I've heard rumors that by this time next year the company will be broke...We're doing all sorts of quality control stuff over in the metal stamping side of the fab plant..I'm really not sure whats taken so long for them to do it. I'm sure MB was doing stuff like this eons ago.

I guess we should give them some credit, they are thinking small car. But today's small car is yesterday's mid-size. My 190 is considered a sub-compact. I think it just the right size though.

I dont get the transvestite engine line though.

There is one common factor about all the cars I will own in my entire life....

They will all either be Rear Wheel Frive, All Wheel Drive, or 4 Wheel Drive.

Front Wheel Drive though.... Not any fun.

They like to call it a transverse engine and I like to call it a transvestite engine. I don't think either belong in a car.

I will pay $100 for a working FWD car. That is all I think they are worth to me.

hahaha. I dislike FWD cars too. It just seems unnatural and wrong. Even in the snow everyone says that FWD is So much better. I'd rather have my RWD 190...

Its based on the same platform as the Cobalt. I dont think its a redesign.

"GM will unveil a five-passenger sedan that measures just under 181 inches long, roughly the same size as the current Cobalt sedan. GM says the Cruze "was developed by a global design and engineering team and will be built in multiple locations around the world," including Asia, Europe and North America."

It will be powered by the 'Family Zero' engines....[wtf kind of name is that?]

Not all FWD cars are bad. I'd love an original Mini.

ok, so if its built on the same platform of the cobalt, what is the point of building the damn car? All it is, is a styling redo.

Let me know when GM gets the idea we don't want the same car repackaged with the same inefficient engine they have been pushing for the last century

The cruize looks like a SAAB with that styling (thumbs up) we all know that it will be of poor quality, as it is a GM product (thumbs down) FWD (thumbs down). . .Ill only buy an American truck, no American car will interest me, that stigma is too hard to shake.
