Honest banker.....honest!

Today I read in the local paper about a lady in NW Indiana, Munster, who went into a local bank and deposited $2000 in cash. It was actually two one thousand dollar bills. The teller recognized that they were very old and they were worth about 3 to 4,000 each. The bank called the lady and told her of their value and suggested she take them and sell them.
They said "We are a community bank and we want to do what is best for our customers".

How refreshing, honorable bankers.

I told the Mrs. about it and pondered what I would have done if I were a teller confronted with that situation. She said ....."You would do the same thing."

I said if the person was a nasty person I probably would have kept it to myself and cashed them in myself.

Now the question is:
what would you do?

Thats why I deal with Milford bank, and Sikorsky, they are like that. I love local banks.

The bank on the East side of Madison I go to is Wells Fargo. They have been excellent to me. They are not a local bank either.

It's good business. If she sells them now it's 6-8K she can deposit in the bank rather than 2...

I don't believe the bank can do this, something in their regs that once they take in money they can not redistrute it to a specific person.
This is to keep collectors from "bribing" tellers to watch for special coins, and tellers from doing the same.

Years ago guy had collected pennies, lots, 80K face value.

Numistic guy on the news said he would have given him 250k, virtually sight unseen. The bank said they couldn't return them to him.

But this was the right thing to do, hope they won't get in trouble.

Good for the teller. Now, the bank is using the good deed of the teller to laud itself. It was the right thing to do, but it's not the right thing to use publicity to elevate status. But that's the commercial world.

Why do you think they would do that if there was nothing in it for them? Why do people do things like that? Because there is some payback in it for them. It might or might not be monetary but there is always some payback for the one who does these good deeds. Otherwise, how can we expect them to do it?

In dog training, we use the principle NILIF.

I enjoy the look on the faces of the teenagers working the restraunt drive through window when they give me back too much change and I make them stop and recount.

I hope they learned two lessons.
