Talking I cheaped out...

I got cheap this week and bought some Smirnoff "triple distilled" vodka. OMFG this crap its like drinking E85! Gut rot.

The Smirnoff costs like 1/2 as much as the good stuff and I can see why!

I'm making screw drivers with like 1/2 the amount of vodka I usualy add to hide it. Usualy I fill the glass about 1/2 the way up, add ice than orange juice. Now I'm at 1/4! I'm at like girl level with my vodka mix.

Gives you a hang over to, Ketal 1 or Gray Goose won't do that.

Worst vodka I ever had was called "Mr. Boston". My roomate had a bottle of it freshman year. He was a bona fide alcoholic and was still trying to give it away. I managed half a shot of it, and it was like drinking rubbing alcohol. Back when I still drank vodka, I was partial to a Polish brand distilled from potatoes. It started with an L. Now I mostly stick to beer, whisky (Scotch), and whiskey (Irish).

Whiskey can be brutal to. I went with my friends last week to kind of a dive bar, and did quite a few whiskey shots. Even after a pitcher of beer each they didn't go down smooth! My stomich was hurting the next day!

Whiskey and Yukon Jack.

If the whiskey is brutal, you're drinking the wrong kind. Try some Jameson or Bushmills next time. Or for a good starter Scotch, try Jonnie Walker Red or Black. For single malts, start with a mild highland like Glenfiddich and work your way up. I love Laphroaig and Lagavulin, but these are acquired tastes.

I'm not much of a Scotch or Whiskey drinker. My friends dad loves scotch and has a $200 bottle that I have been eyeing. All he drinks are scotch on the rocks.

I'm really a vodka drinker. Its simple, and the more you pay the more filtered it is. But you can mix it with a lot of stuff, to make interesting drinks. Even straight its not bad.

While I was in college back east, a couple of friends and I, landed a demo job on a summer cabin. When we hit the basement we found several cases of early Johnnie Walker Black Label, with cork seals and lying of their sides. I'm guessing pre-prohibition stuff. It was like warm butter on hot toast. Our find financed one hell of a Mexico trip.

In reality, the mid-priced Vodka is perfect for mixed drinks. Spending twice the cost of Smirnoff to mix with Orange juice is just foolish. If you appreciate the better Vodkas..........you'll make a martini out of them or drink them straight out of the freezer.

The Smirnoff is fine as a mixer and it's not at all harsh in taste when mixed with OJ or any other juice. I do agree on the headache factor. Lately, I've been drinking Skyy as an alternative to Smirnoff..........seems to have less of an effect. I prefer it with tonic.

Many folks think they can taste "cheap vodka". With the exception of the really low priced offerings, these people will fail a blind taste test in a mixed drink............just like all the wine connoisseurs. The marketers have sold you a label..........not much more.

I read an article recently that was about a blind taste test with so called vodka pro's, Grey Goose rated last with Stoli, Smirnoff and Ketel at the top, Ketel has the most recognizable taste so I'm sure they picked up on that. Personally unless its a Martini we use Smirnoff and if going straight up Stoli, Belvedere, Jewel of Russia and a few other to experiment with...but never Grey Goose..French Vodka? just say nyet.

Old Mr Boston's Bartenders guide stipulates you should have mixed it
