This is a new one, and its pretty good! Don't mess with a country girl, she will rack a 12 guage round and blow your head off.

Hop a Southwest flight to Nashville. You will like it. Go to the Grand Ole Opry, then you will see what it is all about.
The main downside to country music is that it is a business like any other and the acts that get airtime are not the best, just the ones that have been chose by the "machine". For example, Alison Krauss has won more Grammy's than any other woman in history, and more country awards than just about anyone, but is almost never heard on radio. On the other hand we have Jessica Simpson on country radio... As far as it being pop, yes. Here are some recent country acts: Bon Jovi Eagles Lynyrd Skynyrd (aka VanZant) Jessica Simpson

Listen to Hank Williams III, Steve Earl, James Hand, Merl Haggard and Guy Clark to start with and then talk again about your love for country music...what you are revering to is pop from Nashville...

Hey, I like country's current incarnation. I never could stand Hank Sr.'s yodeling, and after working at country radio stations in the '70s, I've had my fill of Red Sovine and other "trucker" music.
Country today is the last form of pop music in which: 1) You can understand every word being sung 2) The artists look their best, even dress up, when they go onstage (compare Faith Hill's class to Amy Winehouse's trailer-trash look) 3) The songs at their best are almost pure short stories (Randy Travis: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8Hl-em8Azo (Garth Brooks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JOaP-3a2ojk (Collin Raye: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycze0tiMAPw ) Try Tracy Lawrence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zhaSPhx6_nA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0ZKJ2DNDnUY If it's pop, it's damn good pop.

Johnny Cashes version of "Hurt" written by Nine Inch Nails still brings a chill down my spine. I like the Dixie Chicks, Patsy Cline and Toby what's his last name, Brooks and Dunn and a few others.

Jerry Reed is/was amazing. He could not only sing in that redneck mode -- "East Bound and Down," "She Got the Gold Mine (I Got the Shaft)," "When You're Hot You're Hot" -- he could also do ballads effectively: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLMv58wWclo
He was a good actor too -- he plays the villain in "Gator" with Burt Reynolds. And he was legendary in Nashville for his guitar style, up there with people like Chet Atkins. .
