+++++++++++

Appears the real deal, US car converted by AMG.

I have never seen one of these, and if it was only 1 0f 2 done, as claimed, easy to see why.

Justin, you should raid the college fund for this one. It would be the last car you would ever need

Regardless of what he says, Hartmut of Renntech claims only one of those wagons ever made in the US. The seller really doesn't know much about the car (if you read his description) which would concern me a bit. The car's also been completely, and I mean COMPLETELY, redone. Not a good thing either. It's got the wrong headlights (it's a US car), the wrong wheels, a faded interior, and an ugly engine bay.

I would want docs or something to prove that AMG touched it - more likely AMG of NA rather than Affalterbach. On the plus side, the pieces all look AMG except the wheels.

He is asking about $30k to much. He could have had the body cleaned up a bit, and spent a few grand on the faded interior and engine bay if he was going to ask $50k.

For that kind of money a paper trial is demanded, of which there is no mention.

Could be legit, but could also be an M117 drop in. Either way its a $15k car on a good day, IMHO. Needs work.

I put in an offer on it.... We will see what happens. I called my bank, and if he accepts my offer, I will have a nice cashiers check waiting for him....

The owner is Dave Shimano, and a good deal of the 500E guys know about him. He knows alot about the car, but I do not think that it is him who is personally listing the auction.

Everything about that car is correct. Its got the right Aero I wheels... I have the Car and Driver that it was in... Thats a real deal, german AMG Hammer.

The leather is not that bad it is still can be fixed. Use leatherique and your problems will be fixed. I am sure you have no problem shelling out the money for leatherique if you are buying this car.

Not *exactly*

It is NOT a true hammer (with the DOHC) because the DOHC cost 49% more than this one, with retailed at $100,000 at the time (1988) as explained by Buxbaum

The Hammers with the 4 valve head cost $65,000 more to produce and about 200 more hours of labor to build than the SOHC, balanced and blueprinted

But, it is known the DOHC engine is more troublesome and less reliable than the SOHC 6.0 which did 0-60 in 5.7 which was pretty fast for a staton wagon back in 1988, and the quarter mile in 14.2, top speed of 153 mph..

So not a true Hammer, but it's good enough....and it would be more reliable than the 6.0

Definately, go for it.

I saw this one Justin, and it had your name written on it. You know what an 88 300TE is all about anyhow.

This would be as good as it gets. You'd need agreed value insurance for it, because it's basically a driveable collectors car, a piece of history.

Get it and I will happily buy the Leatherique for you.

Interesting - the top speed on my AMG 3.2 6-cyl is 151. I'd have thought the V8 would go faster at top end. It's got me on 0-60 though, because mine's just at about 6 secs for that run.
