I haven't seen a "gun" discussion here in the last 5 minutes.

BAN KITCHEN KNIVES TO SAVE LIVES, SAYS DOCTOR

DEADLY: Kitchen knives among a haul confiscated by the police

Friday May 30,2008
By Tom Morgan Have your say(6)
A SENIOR doctor yesterday called for a ban on long, pointed kitchen knives in a bid to reduce the number of stabbings.

Dr Mike Beckett said the point of a knife served little purpose in the kitchen.

He spoke out after Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Ian Blair said that kitchen knives were the weapon most commonly used in teenage stabbings.

Dr Beckett, a consultant in emergency medicine at West Middlesex University Hospital, said: “What people want in a kitchen knife is the edge. It is the edge that does the cutting.

“The point on the end serves little culinary purpose, but it is the point that kills people.”

He added: “The life of a kitchen knife is about 10 years before it goes blunt or is broken or thrown away. So it would be possible, over a reasonable period of time, to get these knives out and, of course, to stop selling them.”

Dr Beckett, who first called for a ban two years ago, said: “There have been many instances where people have disturbed an assailant, grabbed a knife from the block in a kitchen and had it turned against them. These accidents would not have happened if there were not pointed weapons in every kitchen.”

He said that while a blunt-ended knife could still be used to kill, it would take more than a “single lunge,” giving a victim the opportunity to fight back or escape. Daily Express chef Antony Worrall Thompson said that pointed knives were essential for specialised tasks such as filleting fish or meat.

But he added: “For everyday cooking you don’t really need a pointed knife. The Chinese, Japanese, the Far East use cleaver-style knives for everything.”

But Tory MP Roger Gale instead urged the reintroduction of the death penalty for murder. “Are we seriously suggesting that the fundamental implements of Western culinary art should be banned?” he said.

“If so, then carpenters’ and plumbers’ weapons such as screwdrivers will have to be taken out of circulation. I would suggest the much more basic but practical response is capital punishment.”

Tom

What a moron! Do we really need for the doctors to protect us from ourselves? That's pretty arrogant-sounding to me.

My doctor asked me during the course of a check up one time if I owned any guns. I asked what that had to do with my physical condition and he said that guns were a leading cause of accidentl death in the home.

"None of your effing business." was my answer.

I was at a Costco a week ago and noticed that the sample block of kitchen knives they had for sale sitting on was not glued in place. Typically they're glued or bolted so people can't grab them or....more likely steal them....but nope they pulled right out of the block....that's a big lawsuit waiting to happen.

That seems to be the trend. We need everyone to take care of us EXCEPT for ourselves, of course.

A load of crap. Leading cause of accidental death. http://www.the-eggman.com/writings/death_stats.html

I wouldn't have said that. Now I would have asked "What do YOU think is the leading cause for doctor incompetence?"

Would Rosanne Barr or Rosie O'donnel be fat if we had taken away all their forks and spoons? I think not. That would mean there would be more hotties in the world. Having said that, please excuse me while I puke from even thinking about them.

It's not so much they're obese slobs as their crudeness and vulgarity that makes me retch. To borrow a phrase from my Grandfather, people like them should neither be seen nor heard but kept in the kitchen doing laundry and peeling vegetables.................

I'd rather wash my own and peel my own than get those two clowns to do anything for me.

Or howzabout spending a little more effort to identify people that are truly bonkers and may be tempted to pick up a pointed knife, screwdriver (insert ad-hoc weapon here) and turn it against their fellow man and then take action to control them?

Based on what I learned last week, those two are probably heavily marbled indicating a "High Choice" or possibly even "Prime" quality grade at slaughter. However, we all know that carcass fat and heavy rib fat can and will work against you in total yield. Based on that, I'd give them a PYG (preliminary yield grade) of a low 4 yield.

Ribeye cut between 12th and 13th rib of Rosie carcass.

Or we can feed them to the Canadian guy on the Greyhound bus or Jeffery Dahlmer if he was alive. Kill 2 birds with one stone.

I don't know. For the 2 of them, maybe I'd let them flip for who gets what. Both are amusing.

Whats next? They going to ban bench grinders and steel? Anyone with a bit of time came make a homemade knife just as deadly as a store bought one. The Brits are off their noodle. They register AIR rifles and swords, IIRC. RT
