Mid-Life Crisis?

As my financial picture continues to slowly improve I start seeing more toys in my future. I start thinking about all of the cars I've always wanted, PWC, a speedboat. All stuff that I couldn't afford at the time but have always wanted. And that got me to wondering, is it just the natural progression or the infamous mid-life crisis?

As I hurdle towards 40 and hopefully at least mid-life (and not 60% life) and am on the edge of being able to afford some fun stuff, I just got to thinking if people are going to look at me pitifully and think "the poor guy's just going though a mid-life crisis." (At least they won't be calling me a *****head )

I have visions of that guy with the bad comb-over, gold rimmed sunglasses driving a 'vette. Are we guys unjustly stigmatized when we get to the 40's and 50's? Maybe it's just the right time financially.

If it was a mid-life crisis, you'd have other issues too. Plus you'd already have purchased your "toy" without consulting anyone.

I think you're just tasting financial freedom and like the flavor. Just don't do anything that will make you backslide.

Ok, so you couldn't afford these toys when you were younger, and now don't want to get them because some random twit in a 2001 Taurus may cast a disapproving glance at a stoplight? No problem - don't get them. Then you become older, lose your mobility and/or marbles, and the only "toy" you can then have is a candy-apple-red Jazzy Power Chair.

Today I turned 49, and as the years pass, one little immutable fact-of-life is hitting home: We are on this planet for about 23 seconds. What do you want to do with your time?

Running gag between me and my (20 year younger) wife is that as long as I don't a) paint my sports car (miata) red, ask her to dye her (red) hair blond, and c) request that she procure a bolt on rack, then I'm clear of the mid-life crisis label.

For the record - ain't no why no how in this or any other world ANY of those three gonna happen. So I'm good

Yeah, you'll have to settle for a fling with a younger woman, Joe. I mean what else could you do if you've already got the cars?

To hell with anybody who thinks badly of you for buying yourself some toys, Swamp. You're a good dad/husband/neighbor etc. If they want to criticize you after all that, let 'em.

Oh I'm not really concerned with what folks thought. Just that we guys may be unjustly criticized for a pure coinicidence.

Let my people go.

Just don't get spinners - so outre, and the 85-year-old in the charcoal gray Jazzy next to you would give you a disapproving look - then pass gas...

Somewhere else on the forum someone posted this:

"I dated a woman for a while who did not like kids at all and never wanted any. She used to say "Kids, they're okay, but I couldn't eat a whole one."

Your comment about diapers made me think of it.

Very well said.

Also consider that as life goes by it is experiences you will remember not things. And as far as boats are concerned, you can rent some nice boats the few times you would actually use one and save all the money and work of maintaining it all the days you don't use it.
