Red face Hurricane (?) Gustav

I could have sworn I saw a thread on this earlier, but no luck on the search. . . .

Botnst, are you hunkered down? The latest track suggests (if the storm follows the cute little line they draw on the map) that it'll come ashore near Morgan City.

As for me, my university is closing at noon tomorrow, and I'm not coming in for half a day. So I'm loading Linda, my bugout kit, and the cats into the car and pointing its big grey nose northeast for Birmingham, AL. I will not deal with another 12 hour/120 mile creep-and-beep nightmare, at the end of which I sleep on the floor of a shelter. No. So I'm leaving early before they set up the ContraFlow stuff on the Interstate.

If the whirling beast swerves and goes to Texas or Florida, I'll have had a mini-vacation. If it doesn't, we'll be comfortable and safe.

AND now Just in case those of you on the East coast feel left out.

"Hanna",
'Looks like she'll be coming to a beach near you late next week.AND with no
impedance of the storm's growth by any landfalls prior to the U.S. East Coast.
This could be a wild one! We're making plans for Tennessee or Western N.C.

I wish it would just fizzle and hit US as Cat 1. Not ready for a Katrina repeat just yet

I lied to my family & told them we'd all head north when I return from travel to a bizarre land, far away. I'll pack them up and send them out on Sunday morning if things still look like Morgan City landfall. That's essentially the Hurrican Andrew track -- no thank you.

I've been watching the spaghetti models on crownweather.com (excellent hurricane website) and they seem to be stabilizing between Sabine Pass & the Pearl River. Mrs B bought new tires for the Benz and fueled-up Botfleet in anticipation of le grand derangement.

I'll be staying in Laf doing what I do.

We generally bug out when anything strong gets close, too. I am a bit concerned about "Hanna" here, but so far the "squashed spider" model tracks don't mean squat for this part of Florida.

The pre-panic buying frenzy has begun gripping the local population. I'll be you couldn't buy a can of tuna south of I-10. No plywood, no generators, and gas stations are running out of fuel.

While I was out of town Mrs B filled the tanks, groceries, water, and bought batteries, etc on Tuesday. Also contacted relatives in the far north (Natchitoches Parish) for evac arrangements. Folks, this is why I adore Mrs B.

In contrast, my checked luggage is lost in the AA vortex.

Damnd speculators

A girl in Biloxi, Miss. I wrote to, who is in its path, said when notice of this came out, the price of gasoline inmediately jumped 60 cents a gallon.

Latest spaghetti plots of model outputs. BenzAdmiral, you're gonna get tropical showers and wind, but not a direct hit. Good news.

I don't know which neighborhood you live in but if you're on the West Bank, watch for the storm surge coming into Bastian Bay to Lake Salvador and up into Lake Catahaouatche (against Jean Lafitte Park). Storm surge models have previously indicated that a strong storm on a similar track could have unusually high, asymmetrical surge as the surge rolls north into Bastian Bay. It's a short vee-shaped bay which could intensify the bulge as it compresses north into the bay.

Bottom line is that I wouldn't evacuate the area unto Sunday or even Monday. By then the forecast track should be sufficiently stable that you should know what to do.

In any case if you have a boat, I'd consider taking that sucker to Slidell or Mandeville.
