notary when selling question

i live in north carolina, we just sold a car last night, the buyer gave us the cash and we gave him the title signed by the owner (me).

he goes to his bank to get HIS signature notarized and they tell him that it is the sellers signature that needs to be notarized. i've sold cars before and hever had to notarize my signature as the seller.

does anyone out there know who is right?

i would hate to get my signature notarized and find out it was done wrong and have to get a new title because of bad advice.

Yes, here in NC you have to get your sellers sig notarized... Not the buyers... If you accidentally signed it without getting it notorized, you'll either have to find a notary friend to do it on the sly, after the fact or just get a duplicate title and start over again.

You both do not need to appear at the DMV or at a notary together. Print the buyers name and address on the back where noted then sign the sellers line in front of the notary. Then give the title to the new owner and they can finish processing it at the DMV at their leisure.

I just signed over a title today. The seller and I BOTH had to be present to sign the title. If there is more than one person on the title, they all have to sign as well, but can do it at different times as long as you leave the title with the notary.

Different states are vastly different in the DMV rules... Some states are much easier than others.

Here's one of my titles with instructions... You do the stuff in red...
