In memory of all who died

Let's take a moment to remember all those who died on this day seven years ago and their friends and families who survived them.

How many of us lost a friend or maybe even a family member in the 9/11 terrorist attacks?

Absolutely, Dee.

We lost a good family friend, Dick Keane, in the WTC attack. His family lived next door to my grandfather and my brother and I grew up with his sons, were on countless sports teams with them and coached by Dick. His family set up a foundation here in town that renovated our community center, put in a new indoor basketball court and a kids' activity center. They're having the dedication/opening today. A couple large pieces of steel from the WTC play prominent parts in the center (their story actually made the national news since they were the first private citizens to get to enter Hangar 17 housing all of the debris). It was his first visit ever to the WTC and had a 9:00 meeting on the top floor that he was so excited to go to.

My brother also lost 2 highschool classmates, Dave Winton and Jeff Bittner, who worked in the WTC and were good friends with one of Dick's sons.

Richard Gabrielle from Ct. Met him on passatworld.com back when it was still clubB5.com. There's a permanent memorial to him on the site. Great guy.

I can't believe it's been seven years already. That day changed everything.

I didn't lose any family members myself, but I worked with people who lost friends that day. I was working at a printing company at the time and we ended up printing posters where all the pictures of the people lost in the tragedy made a mosaic image of the towers. They were sold to help the families.

My condolences to all who suffered a loss that day.

I don't think I knew anyone who perished that day. I did speak to a fellow college alumina who worked for MSDW at the Center. He had a morning appointment in mid-town or else would have died that day. Right place at the right time.

May they all rest in peace.

Until that day, I think we Americans took our security and safety from attack pretty much for granted. Even Pearl Harbor, as bad as it was, was a military target. It was bombed for strategic, military reasons. This was just a stupid, senseless, slaughter of innocent people.
I remember staring at the video over and over that day in disbelief. I kept telling my kids about how they would remember this all their lives just as I did the day JFK was assasinated.

I wouldn't say that. Why do you say they won?

Maybe they won a battle. They'll lose the war, though.

TSA, homeland security, Iraq conquest, murder of Saddam, continual eroding of our freedom in the name of "security", a criminal president running free, high oil prices, high food costs, all the major airlines going bankrupt, record national debt, economy in recession, multi-trillion dollar banks going broke, record foreclosure rates and the list goes on. All because 19 individual nutjobs hijacked some planes and ran them into some buildings.

Terrorism is an idea, its not possible to win because anyone can be a terrorist, anyone can become a terrorist and anyone can be labeled a terrorist.

We'll survive all of that as a country. Sure, those are unfortunate short-term results, but as a country, we're better than all of that.

I don't concede victory to those bastards.

I lost two people I did work with, having taught classes on the 100th floor of the North tower multiple times in the 10 weeks prior. I'm absolutely sure there were others that I taught in the classes, but never knew their names.

On that day, I was at Madison Ave. and 33rd.

Remembering those people, but also enjoying every day I'm here.
You never know.

Scary thing for the family was they knew I went into the city that day, but I bounced around so much, I didn't always say where I was going. Odds were about 1 in 10 I would have been on that 100th floor, we figured later on.

I wasn't able to get in touch with the family until 2:30 that day to let them know I wasn't there. Wife was pretty messed up for about 4 hours, especially since I didn't call. It wasn't by choice. Lines were busy and down, cell included.
Plus, by sheer coincidence, the home phone land line was down and was due to be fixed that day, so even when I got to a phone, no way to contact since we didn't have cell phones yet.
Lines for payphones were unbelievable.

Here's to those folks who aren't here today because of a bunch of jerks.
Don't forget that part.

It's been eerie hearing all of the church's bells toll this morning at the different times of the attacks. I don't remember all of them doing it before this year but maybe they did.

I was a couple blocks from the towers working at one of my data centers that day. I lost two friends who worked for Sun Microsystems, almost lost a bunch more and my best friend almost lost his wife. She was on the 79th floor of the South tower when the other tower got hit. SHe packed her stuff and hit the stairs along with her entire team. A bunch of Cops came up the stairs and told everyone to go back up. They still thought it was an accident and wanted everyone to remain safely in the building and not get hit by debris on the sidewalk. Most of her office turned around, but she told the cops to F-off and pushed past them She got to the street just as the second plane hit. My friend was at the 911 center for the NYFD and heard all the reports thinking that his kid was now an orphan. I told my guys to close the data center and we headed down to see if there was something we could do. We ended up trooping uptown in that mass of survivors. I did loose other people I knew like members of the FDNY team that had pulled me out of a stuck elevator six months prior. They were among the first ones in the buildings...
This still is very fresh in my mind things like not seeing any airplanes, but hearing the F-16's patrolling out over NYC, the burnt wiring smell that lingered over the entire area for weeks, seeing the smoking wreckage from Sandy Hook, NJ. Seeing the tons of papers fluttering around Manhattan and Brooklyn. Having the ashes of dead innocents covering my car. Telling my kids that we will survive and that all is not lost.

What strikes me seven years later is how ****** petty we have become. Here we are going on about ridiculous crap like Palin's daughter and Biden's use of Bartlett's Quotations. Has everybody forgotten that we are at war with a culture of hate? I was ina restaurant up in New Paltz where three morons (who are teachers in the pulic schools) were discussing how the entire thing was a put up job done by the NSA to get us into a war with Iraq. I almost beat them silly!

Forced, Usually I agree with you, but you are WAY out of line today.

W, for all his faults has kept the terror at bay. Better to fight in the Middle East than the Mid West!

God Bless all the victims and their families... God Damn the people responsible.

... A long, long time ago, but I can still remember how
Those towers used to stand so tall...
