Switching faiths. Why?

An old friend is preparing, because of marriage, to convert from Catholicism to Judaism. I don't know the details, didn't ask, and frankly, he informed everyone through mass email about his pending conversion. I gotta admit, the first thing that crossed my mind was, "he's gonna get it cut." So second marriage, baptized Catholic, switching to Judaism.

I'm just wondering what goes on in people's minds when they convert. Say from Christianity to Judaism or Islam. I suppose you're still worshipping the same God, but it seems like it'd take tremendous psychological preparation to make the jump.

I've often wondered about this myself... I have a Jewish friend who married a Southern Baptist woman who then proceded to convert to Judaism. I've never asked him or her why the switch.

Maybe out of devotion to the spouse or maybe they've changed their outlook in life prior to that point and then took the opportunity to make the switch later.

It's all about being able to stuff that cock in the pussy. Conversion is a small price to pay for that for some people. I had a Finnish friend in high school who converted to Islam so he could marry a Malaysian girl and get approval from her family. The wedding was off anyway so the conversion was in vain. I don't know if he officially renounced Islam after that. I don't think he did because it didn't matter to him. He was never religious.

I think things like this should come from within, not to please somebody else. If it doesn't really matter that much to you anyhow, then why bother?

On the other hand, if it doesn't matter that much to you, than what's to lose by converting? None of my friends are very religious anyway, so I haven't encountered this situation, but I can see how wanting to be with someone without causing complications could convince someone to convert.

I think it has to do with where you want to get married and who's family is religious.

I am Jewish and my wife was/is Catholic/Protestant. When we were planing our wedding, we were thinking about getting married in a temple or at least by a rabbi. My folks are survivors and I wanted to do it for them. As I was calling different temples to find out costs and the like, I found out that no rabbi would marry us unless both of us were Jewish. My wife offered to take the classes and do what ever needed to be done. I said no, it was not worth it and to do it just to get hitched is not a good reason (at least not for me). Ends up it was not as important to my parents as I thought it was so we got a J.P. and got married at a B&B south of DFW. Had a fun time, it was cheap and we have no regrets.

Anyway, that might be one reason why they are getting converted.

The church also didn't want to marry me and the wife because I was agnostic and the wife had only been to a catholic school and they didn't see the point of having a deity we didn't believe in get involved in a marriage.

If you were deeply religious I'd assume it would take some major mental strength to drop your faith and embrace another. Seems to me like going it would be going from straight to gay.

If the two were deeply religious and devoted to their respective faiths, I highly doubt they would have a relationship that would get to the point of one having to convert to the other for the sake of marriage or how the future children will be raised.

That makes absolutely no sense. Consider the definition of marriage and rethink what you said.

That's a good point.

In my limited experience, I've noticed that some people may attend a certain church for social reasons as much as belief in the religion. If someone finds more connection/support/fellowship with another religion its not hard to imagine them changing.

Its been pretty well aruged (here) that for as many people claim to be a certain religion, they often deviate from that religious published (or accepted) norms/beliefs for many reasons.
ie: subscribing to a religion doesnt mean that you believe everything that they tell you.

If this is the case (I believe so) its very easy to imagine a "leap" from one monotheistic religion to another. To go from a monotheistic to an agnostic or polythesistic religion is a bit more of a jump.

Is not Catholicism based (term used loosely) on the whole bible, and Judaism is based on the Torah(?) which is the Old testament only (?) - If so, the dude already knows most of his holy book, he just needs to "forget" the parts with Jesus in them =)

Well, you don't wear the same shoes with every outfit, I guess.
