Talking Shot an M16 today for the first time...

Finally went and popped the cherry on my friends new Colt AR15. Damn it was nice, thanks to Bush he had those nice plastic 30 round mag's too!

Nice rifle, I can see why people like them. With just iron sights we were putting them on target at 75-100 yards. Point and click like a mouse! The recoil is very light, but the best part is its in a straight line right back to your shoulder, so no real muzzle rise. You can fire off 2-3 rounds real fast and they all hit.

Its a nice rifle, I put 300 rounds through it and my cloths smell like powder. I said to my friend, thats the smell of freedom!

I still want an AK47, or M14 though...

I did a few days of M14 qualification in high school ROTC. It will make your shoulder sore pretty quick. I also fired a M14-A1 on full auto, scared the crap out of me. But I was a skinny kid at 16 and that thing was climbing up and right REAL FAST on short bursts. I would like to try it again.

Actually the cool one to fire would be a BAR. A buddy has a Thompson full auto and he has NEVER fired it! I would be all over that thing.

When you said the barrel came right back to your shoulder and did not rise on firing I was thinking " What? Thas impossible...you'd never be able to get your eye down to the sight"

From the picture it is very clearly possible and the raised sights is how it is made to work.

A great design innovation!

Its hard to imagine it took three hundred years of evolution to get it this way!

But all great designs look obvious AFTER the designer comes up with the idea!

A long time ago I shot a lot of target rounds through both an M16 and an M14. No question in my mind if you wanted to hit a target a 300m, it's the M14. Prone at 300m I could get a consistent 4 -5 inch group (I ain't no sniper). With the M16 I was lucky to get a 1ft group.

But if it's within 100m the M16 owns it. The M16 is just so much handier and instinctive to point and shoot. If you have it to your shoulder and your head down, you're within a foot without using the sights. It's quicker than you think. No way I could get the M14 up and on like that.

Opinions?

I havn't fired an M14 yet so I can't compare, but the M16 is very instinctive. We were just messing round with the iron sights and most of the rounds were landing on target.

They have upgraded the M14, the EBR version. My friend has an airsoft one that uses a lot of the real parts. Other than being a bit heavy, its quite comfortable.

You can drop a human size target @ 400m+ with the M4/M16 lickety split, yes the M14 has more dropping power, but a hole is hole. Overall the m4/m16 plays a much better role on the battle field because of less barrel heat, a soldier can carry more ammunition with less weight, higher rate of fire for suppressive and cover fire...coupled with the ACOG its even more effective less than 3 inch groups @ 300-400M is no problem with a little bit of skill.

Most people have this heavy caliber spray and pray mentality, f- that shoot em in the head and move on to the next target.

Taking a target from a prone position I got a tighter group with the M14 at 300m.

Don't get me wrong, the m14 is a superior long range weapon I was commenting the overall capability of the m16/m4.

I was commenting on the posts that are guaranteed to follow from the bigger is better crowd. Which BTW is the crowd that never walked 15 miles let alone carry a rifle and ammo load while doing it.

Well, I have walked 15 miles with a 16 and a full pack and I agree about weight. However, when I was in Nam in 1968 the 16 was not a reliable weapon. The 16 was good for supression but the 14 was much better for accuracy. It has been so long; I hardly recognize the weapons in the pics.

For years the Army thought they needed a .30 cal weapon. The jungles of Vietnam closed the distance gap so much a handier weapon became the wiser choice. For the same reason (jungle) a lot of guys liked the military shotgun. Now in Iraq, with the whole country built from cinder blocks, the preferred round is the good old 7.62 (for penetration). A lot of the bad guys over there are jacked up on opium and smaller rounds don't drop them. Same thing occurred in Korea with the M1 carbine, not enough punch when the bad guy was wearing heavy winter clothes.

Springfield Armory has the SOCAL (sp) a M14 variant. Has the pistol grip stock like the M16. All the special ops guys use 7.62.

Personally I don't see why the military can't have both. Standardization is great but not if it gets in the way of functionality. In previous wars, they had several different weapons, M1, carbine, Thompson, M3 grease gun, BAR, etc. I am sure it caused logistical problems and not being able to pick the ammo from the dead guy and knowing it will work in your gun might cause some stress.

I always enjoyed shooting the .223's. BTW, if your friends rifle is like the one in the pic you posted, I believe that's a CAR 15. But I have been known to be wrong...

Total absolute BS. No offense but I don't know of an easier way to put it.

I knew this was coming at the beginning of this thread, I don't know where people come up with this stuff.
