Dem Vice Presidential Candidate Stirs Up More Controversy

The Democratic candidate for vice president, John W. Kern, campaigning in Birmingham, Ala., denounces an article (“Grover Cleveland on the Campaign and His Prophecy of Its Result”) that The New York Times published on Aug. 30, “attributed to the late Grover Cleveland,” Kern says, and containing “a strong endorsement of the Republican candidate for president.” Kern cites “proofs” that the article is “a base and criminal fabrication.” The New York Times responds to Kern at the end of the report, asking to see the proofs he mentions.

And Big News From the Auto Racing World... Two and a half hours into a 24-hour auto race at Brighton Beach, a racing official was stuck by the lead car, a Simplex, as he attempted to dash across the track last night in front of 10,000 spectators. The official, Thomas K. Fickett, as he was later identified, was not expected to live. The driver, George Robertson, stopped at the judges’ stand and left the wheel to his mechanic, who proceeded with the race. Robertson hurried to the hospital tent, where he was placed under arrest by police inspectors at the scene.
