My first time :)

Not what a bunch of your sick minds are thinking I'm sure...

I became a US citizen about two years ago and this will be the first time I get to vote in an American election. I have to say I never thought I'd be as disgusted with the options as I am. It's almost enough to make me stay home. But that won't happen. Instead I plan to take the day off work and watch it all unfold on my laptop, and TV.

- Peter.

Get used to it (the options). I for one, kinda like the options this go round, but I felt as you did the last 2 elections. Were were you from? Oh, I see- South Africa.

I think we almost always think the choices suck. It is only in retrospect ( if even then) that we see more clearly.
Whenever people say that no one has ever been criticised like______, I think about the way Lincoln was portrayed in the opposition press. Now, most people consider him among the best, ( although you can get a good argument on that), but at the time he was considered much like our current President.

Take the day off if you want Peter, but the juices don't start flowing on election night until after 8:00 EST. They usually wait until after polls close in various states before making calls one way or the other. They it drags on and on and on, listening to the same people for hours. It gets down to gut check time around 10:00 or so, depending on how the votes are falling.
Usually over by midnight, except of course, 2000.

You may be surprised to find it's just another work day for most folks. Little noticeable difference, except around voting places.

Enjoy the experience.
Edit:
All time references are East Coast.

Unless you happen to be in his crosshairs.

Oh I know it's just a regular work day for the majority. But being an inherently lazy individual I figure I'll just give myself my own federal holiday Besides I have family scattered around the globe who are fairly interested in what goes on here and it'll be neat to e-mail them as things unfold, even if it's at the rate of molassas in the wintertime.

Always used to watch US elections back home in South Africa. It'll be an interesting change to paricipate in one myself. If memory serves I think I've only ever voted once or twice in SA and the only time that it meant anything wasnt even an election but a referendum.

Peter,

Congrats on your Naturalization 2 years ago and the opportunity to vote in this election. I agree that the choices are, well, they could be better.

I remember when I went to the Fed building in LA to be interviewed by a very kind man who asked a few questions and told me "that I'd be a US citizen very soon". I was in 3rd grade at the time, but I felt even at that age that this was something really cool. Later that day, I yelled out to my classmates that "I am an American!" In retrospect, it is a huge deal as I've travelled quite a bit throughout the world and realize that this country is truly the best country in the world. On an other note, that is why my horns get really raised and pointed when I hear native born Americans rip America for even the little of little things. Even in the worst times, we have it so much better in terms of government and redress should the govt fail us.

Anyways, good luck and I hope you make a choice that you're comfortable with
