Thanks God I'm leaving!!!
I'm currently living in a suburb of Dayton, Ohio and have been employed as a Toolmaker by various GM suppliers in the area for over 23 years.
GM just announced that they will close the Moraine plant before the end of the year. When I started in this trade, there were over 3500 tool and machine shops in the area, the largest conglomeration of such in the world. We are now down to 65 independent shops. with the closing of GM, Duramax will follow. Delphi, formerly known as Delco, has closed many plants in the area as well. It is projected that 80-85% of the remaining shops will close the doors after the first quarter of 2009. Dayton will become another Detroit within a year. I have been laid-off 4 times in the past 24 months, and have gotten sick and tired of drawing unemployment. Thank God that I accepted an offer in Ogden Utah last month and am moving next week. If i hadn't accepted the offer, I'd stay on unemployment longer than the 4 months I've been on it so far. BTW...I purchased the 560SL with the signing bonus I received by accepting the job in Ogden!! I feel it was a better investment than the stock market!!

Good luck! I guess the $25B the taxpayers just pumped into those black holes known as the big three didn't save your job. We should have just cut you guys $250k checks, to smooth the transition. Rather the money go right to the workers than the fat cats who will waste/steal it.

Are you an Obma supporter? If so you will be the first one in Utah.

I remember making deliveries to GM's New Departure Division in New Jersey, where they made precision bearings. It was a huge bustling energetic place. Sad to see them all slip away.

I'd rather have MY cut of the $700b that just slipped away instead! The company is paying for my ENTIRE move, to include transporting my 560SL. The offer included $0.595 per mile to drive out there, so the wife and I are heading out in her 2003 Mitsubishi Outlander. According to my calculations, I should be getting a check from them for nearly $1000.00 just for mileage...that doesn't count the food and lodging they will pay for as well! We will be traveling with 2 fully grown, 110 pound boxers!! They are giving me temporary accommodations in the form of a fully furnished apartment, $30 a day allowance for food, etc. until permanent housing is found by me, then my furnishings and such will be taken from storage and unpacked all on company dime! I fell into a pile of **** and came out smelling like a rose once again!

You are a fortunate fellow indeed. When you get there kneel down in front of the nearest Bridgeport vertical mill {or CAD}and say"Thank You God"...

Yes. Good for you.
I'm a democrat but more of a true conservative than the drunken sailors the republicans have become! (No offense to drunken sailors)!
