Exclamation Yikes, I have a big mess waiting for me at home...

I just got word that the gravel truck came and delivered a full load to the house... I'm not looking forward to moving 16 tons of crusher-run with the little 42" blade on my tractor.

But I guess it has to be done...

If you don't have a loader, may as well go ahead and get a bobcat lined up for the weekend--you'll likely wish you had.

I'll try the Deere out and if I have too much trouble, I'll bring a loader home from Sunbelt for the day on Sat.

The gravel is for a new parking/loading area in front of the house. Also, I'm leveling the driveway up to some new edging I installed, as well as making a new parking area by the wood house and repairing storm damage on the slope of the driveway.

Too true, otherwise....

Oops! I take it you were expecting a 1/2 load or at least that they'd do it while you were there to put it in the right spot?

Doesn't sound like fun no matter how you look at it.

I can relate to the shovel thing. I've hand shoveled about 500 sq. ft of 3/4 landscape gravel into the flower beds. Shovel full by shovel full, wheel burrow load by wheel burrow load...

I did some quick math before placing the order doing the sq. footage times the depth and give a rough estimate of how many yards I'd need. Since I haven't seen it yet, I don't really know what to expect...

Come to think of it, I need to overseed the yard too...

WOW!! That's a lot of stone.

I had 6 ton of crushed red stone delivered to dress up my driveway and make it larger. I had them tail-gate spread the length of the drive and I still had a huge pile that took about 10 hours of wheelbarrow and shovel with stone raking.

Good luck.

Yeah, they tailgate-spread in a few places and down the driveway... You're not making me feel any better...

At least you have some kind of equipment to help you spread and the weather is cooler. I spread my stone in the middle of summer by hand. My labor is free as far as $$$, but it cost me in other ways. I vowed to rent a Bobcat next time.

To me, the bobcat/loader is more important for distribution than finish spreading. Sound's like he has a blade, but 'spreading' gravel with a small blade, say from the pile, to 75 yds down the drive is not going to give a good result, imE (thick pileups near the pile, and less compaction the farther away you get). However, I seem to recall kartek is a bridge engineer, so I probably didn't do it right when I undertook the procedure.

sunedog-wife and I spread two double axle dump truck loads of sand for our basement when we were building our house some years ago. The first load was dumped right in the middle of the basement and all we had to do was fling it to distribute it. The second load was dumped in the driveway and we had to wheelbarrow it into the basement.

When I found out we moved 50 TONS OF SAND, I had a retroactive hernia. (I didn't order the load, our GC did.) Don't think I've ever revealed to the wife how much we moved.

Of course, sand is MUCH easier to shovel than gravel. Good luck with your job.

Thanks, well, I'm leaving to go home now... I'll find out in a few minutes what the damage is... (or will be)

I had an old-timer suggest getting it spread generally with a blade and finish with an old box spring that's been set on fire and burnt down to just the springs.

Worked like a charm when we did my friend's parking area that way. Of course, a section of chain link fence would work just as well (or better) I suppose.

Have fun!
