Top Gear did a review of the Cadillac Escalade and they called in a "bling" expert who explained that line of thinking. You put all you money into a (rapidly depreciating) car and then can't afford to put over 7 quid worth of petrol in it at a time. It makes no sense to me, but apparently it's a popular financial choice.

OTOH, I could see myself selling my house and cruising around the country in a big Prevost coach! I wonder if I could get a mortgage for one...

Unfortunately my wife doesn't share the same vision. At least not while the kids are still in K-12. I guess she has a good point there.

Yeah, my dad tried to buy a Beaver Motorhome, and my mom shot that down...

She wants him to wait until my two sisters and I are out of college.

Some people can't manage money, my guess is they are maxed on credit cards as well.....unfortunatley it took this credit crunch crap to make the credit card companies realize they need to make extending credit to RESPONSIBLE PEOPLE.

My brother's BIL was a cop in Glastonbury up until 2 years ago, which is a high income Hartford suburb. He'd respond to call, usually false alarms, and said he'd go to these houses with Bimmers, Benzes, Rovers, Audis, etc. parked in front of these big, lavishly landscaped McMansions and there would be no furniture inside many of the houses. An ocassional couch or table and chairs and usually a big flat screen tv. Just big and shiny on the outside. I wonder how those folks are doing these days?

I'm guessing some of them are facing foreclosure, and some are trying to sell some posessions at a sizable loss.

You don't even have to go inside some of these type homes to see how strapped the occupants are. Simply look at the windows. Many can't even afford to install shades or curtains.

As a former agent I saw that all the time. Its very commen in new sub divisions, they cannot even afford to properly landscape them. Going inside 20-30 different houses a week was a real eye opener to how some people live.

A shiney car doesn't impress me anymore. I know some big lossers who don't have a dime to their names, but they put on a good show in there new Lexus and BMW's.

Some houses are quite nice though, people do have good taste and sometimes the money to back it up.

I think a mortage on a semi truck and trailer is the only wise decision. Its going to pay itself off in short order if you can keep the loads coming.

Plus I had no idea those things cost that much!
