Buying a second Mercedes to fix up and drive/sell?

In Chicago, there seems to be a good amount of rare Mercedes for sale that are good drivers/projects. I've been thinking about buying a second Mercedes to drive and fix issues on over the winter, and sell it in the summer, hopefully for a profit. Or, I could just keep it at my house in the garage. Seems like a do-able hobby, now that I've fixed nearly everything on my 300cd, including the A/C.

How do these cars look as projects, all are at a decent price, and should be worth more when cleaned up, and eBayed.

A 1985 280ce AMG w123 coupe. 100k miles, asking $3200.
It's probably a basket case, but it looks decent in the pictures, and it has all the euro goodies, like the AMG spoilers, and bumpers and headlights.

1989 300ce European coupe. Asking $2200.
This one looks nice, it has a great color, it's a grey market with velour seats and manual HVAC controls.

AMG Mercedes 190e 1985 5 Speed asking $2200, triple black

I think that 190e would be the most fun to drive out of all three. What do you think about one these three cars? Which one would be a good bet as a project fixer-upper, that I could keep for a while or sell if I decide to? All three seem to be decent candidates. I still have a while to decide if I want another car or not, but cars like these don't show up that often.

The 280 seems to be a fake AMG

Chicago Benz's are cheap because we use way too much salt on the roads and, well, to paraphrase Neil Young, 'Rust Never Sleeps'.

My 250C that I picked up last year turned into a major project fast - new rockers, new trunk floor, new fenders. Then there was the new paint, new carpet, new headliner, new glass seals.......

If you want a car to have fun with, then go for it. If you are going into it as a business venture, I suggest you think again.

By the way, the 300CE is down the street from me. If you are interested and want me to have a look let me know.

No one wants to buy old MB from that area because they are all rust buckets by now. Unless you can find one that was only driven half the year.

As strange as it sounds if you want a perfect example of an odd ball car Japan seems to be flush with them.

Or a Golf in my case. I think I'll take care of this POS, I bet I can get a G note for it from some sucker in April. Make a fast $600.

Well, rust is pretty much guaranteed in Chicago or Saint Louis on an old MB. I just want something to play with, maybe keep it for a while, maybe not. The 190e ad mentions rust spots, but the other ads don't say much. What's weird about the 300ce, is that is has a different hood and grille from a SL, I think. The 300ce appears to be a European version as well. Thanks for the offer to go check it out, I have to see if it's possible for me to have another car before I would drive up there to look at it. Probably major rust would be one of the only deal killers here, or the car being a basket case.

The 190e would need the basic "just out of storage" stuff like changing fluids and tires, I'll have to look into the 190e and the 300ce. The 280ce doesn't seem like a real AMG comparing it to Boardmonger's 1979 AMG. The 190e ad has been up or a week, and the 300ce 2 days. I think the 190e would be much more fun, but with sitting 5 years and having rust it could be much more of a basket case.
