An amazing project!!!! I was in Portland this summer and this slipped by me somehow ...in my defense, I did cruise down to McMinnville for a look at another big wood boat.

Man, you gotta love journalists: I like that part where he says: '...kind of how your eyes are drawn to the sky by the distinct sound of a radial aircraft engine on a vintage bomber" ...and they show a pic of a RAF Lancaster, sporting four, count 'em four, Rolls-Royce Merlin aircraft engines, which IIRC are in-line, not radial engines.

That's as accurate and well-researched as many of the comments made by so-called "journalists".

What a cool story! PT's were always my favorite boats and I used to love watching McHales Navy when I was a kid. It's really cool to hear the engines roar. I'd like to find out where that boat is for a possible tour if it's on the East coast.

R Leo is correct about the Lancaster... I saw one flying in Dayton a few years ago. It sounds like a flight of 4 Mustangs!

Exactly the reason I go to the County Farm Fair. There is usually a tractor puller powered by a couple of Aliisons. What a glorious sound!

Thanks for sending me this the other day Bot! I love PT boats and had the pleasure of seeing one in action recently, although sadly I didn't get a ride.

She is a Vosper, last one left! A bit smaller than an Elco or Higgins. Sadly she has a pair of Detroit 8v92TIB's, which are only able to push her to about 20 knots. But never the less seeing that boat moving along was very cool! To bad it didn't have the triple Packards 5M-2500's so she could scream along at 50 knots! While burning 500 gallons per hour!

I have always had a thing for the PT boat. If only I could find one... Gotta hear those three Packards roaring.

I did see a German S-boat in action in Mexico. They use it as a coastal patrol boat. It is bigger and more powerful than the PT boats we had as it needed more strength to hold up in the Atlantic.

Some of these boats were built by the Rockport Yacht and Supply Co. just a few miles north of here in Rockport, Tx. I remember visiting this yard in the early '50s and seeing a set of 3 Merlin engines under a tarp. I was awed by them even when I didn't really know what they were.

There was another one of these just across the river here in Vancouver; they took a chain saw to it a few months back.

I think PT 109 was from Higgens. Also, I worked at Mellville, RI, the former naval facility that Cmdr. Jack Kennedy trained at.
