What is this "Steam Punk"? Is it like Capt. Nemo/Nautilus kind of style/technology?

Dee8go 10-22-2008 12:48 PM

That's what it reminded me of. The Don posted something about it a while back and I was really impressed with the look of it. It has the functionality of high tech but the soul of old, mechanical devices.

There was a steampunk group that I ended up hanging out with at the Con in August. They where a very cool group and even played their parts at times.

The con in august ? Indianapolis perhaps ?

(I was there, just for a day to play NSDM though, not hardcore enough to hang the weekend and dress up/attend the Steampunk ball......)

There's a steam punk ball?! I'd love to see THAT!

"Steamin' at the Steam Punk Ball . . . "

Or does it have the functionality of old, mechanical devices but the soul of high tech?

Hatterasguy 10-22-2008 09:06 PM

Steam punk is the blending of old and new technoligy. Usualy it draws a lot from the Victorian age, although Last Exile drew heavily from the Golden Age of Aviation.

When done right it is a fascinating to see.

I'd say the soul of the old, and functionality of high tech.

Now that I think a little more about it, that movie "Dune" had kind of a steam punk flavor...

Carleton Hughes 10-23-2008 06:19 AM

Thanks for the cool link,my Mistress.
Seems like an inchoate, aesthetics driven reaction against the functional sterility inherent in this tech-driven society.

I'll post some neat pics later of some my really fancy original gadgets, the youngest of which is at least 80 years old.

Think Will Smith and Wild, Wild west

Yep. You're right. I think both Dune and The Wild, Wild West had a lot of Steam Punk flavor. At the time they came out, I had never heard that term, though.
