Has anyone installed a remote start system on a car?

Hi all,
I am thinking about buying one and installing it on my girlfriends 98 Toyota Avalon. Her car has remote entry but she doesn't have a FOB for it. So I was going to buy a FOB, but for her car they are about $40 on ebay compared to other car's FOBs for $15-20. So I thought why not get a remote starter that doubles as a locking FOB.

I (we) live in MN and it gets pretty cold in the winters and she grew up in Las Vegas. She doesn't like the cold as much as I do.

Her parking at her apartment is heated but she travels to lots of hospitals throughout the day (and night when she is on call!). So having a warm car would be good.

2 main things-
I want to install it myself (insert your opinions here about the ease/difficulty of this)
I want a remote that works long range

Anyone have any experience installing these? Do I need anything special, like a code-reader or such? I have lots of tools but not much for the computer cars (don't you love our old Mercedes? )

Any input on brands? I was probably going to look for one on craigslist or ebay that is new in the box. I did a quick search last night and a lot popped up.

Thanks!
-Ryan

I installed a Bulldog remote starter/door lock system a while back on a (now sold) Ford Escort. Tedious and time consuming, but otherwise piece of cake. No genius required. As an added bonus, afterwards you'll know how to hotwire a car too.

There is one on my new to me 2002 F250 7.3 powerstroke (don't ask), and I can say while I don't need it, it is quite amusing to fire that thing up in the parking lot while seated at a table in a restaurant while a couple is PDAinig next to it

They are time consuming to install, other than that, not really all that bad. Its about the same as installing a keyless system that locks out the ignition.

I put one in for a friend, and it took about 2 hours.

Thanks for the responses.

2 hours does not sound that long to me. I just spent ohhh, about 40 hours pulling and putting in a 'new' transmission and engine and pulling parts off the 116.

I am pretty good at following directions from a manual, so I was just wondering how complicated it was, but it sounds like it is not too bad.

Can anyone comment on the range that their's works at? I saw a few that claimed to work close to up to a mile. I would think that would have the ability to get through the concrete walls of a parking lot and hospital. I think the signal was called FM technology? I'm assuming it transmit on a radio frequency?

I kind of figured the mile range would have to be under ideal conditions.

The Viper's seem to operate on a 900mhz signal.

The three I listed seem to use FM signals. I would think that makes a difference but I'm sure it doesn't work at a mile under normal conditions.

What I like is the screen on the remote confirming that the signal was received and the car starts. That is propably as important as range.
