Reliable $4,000 car

A friend needs a reliable car. Budget is $4,000. My friend has no mechanical skill at all. Previous car was a Toyota Camry. Would like something similar.

What cars should she consider?

I'm thinking in terms of a Japanese or Korean car, but am open to suggestions.

Police Interceptors.

Used Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor, but with the Street Appearance Package so it will never have been beat on in pursuit or patrol duty but was a take home car by a Captain or Watch commander, or a US Marshalls car, or Secret Service protection car. Has the dead reliability of the Panther platform but with Police heavy duty radiator, battery, alternator, transmission and oil cooler, rear end, full size spare, etc.

They are all over ebay. $4,000 can get you a good one if you shop carefully, but avoid city patrol and dog units, because the smell inside won't go away. ever

Plenty of them are on ebay, such as this one which was a nice unmarked Supervisors take home car in good condition and never beat on and in a good color

There is a place in California a reputable place that gets them sometimes. the owner is a retired cop who knows where to find them. He sells on ebay under "in-pursuit."

There are reputable online stores that retail them such as www.copcarsonline.com and those are good places to look. A good place for information and fine tuning your questions is the forum on www.crownvic.net

Another good place to look is for one is finding a Mercury Grand Marquis, or Ford Crown Victoria from someone that died or was retired, because they are driven gently, usually.

They are very reliable, very durable and very very cheap to run, dollar for mile. They almost never need repairs.

I'll agree with most of the reccomendations here: 4-banger Honda or Toyota (much easier to work on than the sixes), Subie, or Ford Crown Vic.

I work at a junkyard and like to check odometers on the junked cars. FWD domestics usually get junked around 160k miles. Hondas and Toyotas consistently come in with 200-240k. Subarus vary a lot, but I've seen a lot over 200 thousand and a few over three hundred thousand. I've seen more Vics over 300,000 miles than any other car.
